T-Mobile G1

My wife (of all people) sends me a link about Googles news G1 phone. Has anyone else heard about it or seen one in person? I've been a T-Mobile customer before they were T-Mobile and looking at getting a smart phone to replace my 2 year old razor. How is the Android O/S that it runs?

They just announced it yesterday. Not even big-name reviewers have gotten their hands on the final model yet. The biggest complains I've seen, at least compared to the iPhone is that it has no headphone jack (need an adapter), small amount of memory, no multitouch, and a choppy browser. A lot of people are throwing a fit about the headphone jack and memory, but I personally wouldn't use it as a media player, so those aren't deal-breakers for me. The browser thing will probably get worked out as well. My contract is up in January, and I'll definitely be keeping an eye on out. The Blackberry Bold looks interesting too, but it's not out in the US yet.

Some guys that work at Google posted on Shacknews that they could finally talk about it. One had used the G1 for 6 months, the other for 2. Someone asked if it's better than the iPhone, and they both agreed it is not. They felt the hardware was rushed by HTC, and the software is of course very young in the development cycle. It would probably be best to wait for the next revision, unless you really need a smart phone ASAP. T-Mobile is also implementing a stupid rule for data transfers too. If your traffic is greater than 1 GB in a billing cycle, they reserve the right to cap you at 50 Kbps. That won't take long to hit at 3G with all the bandwidth hogging apps that are standard on the phone.

I may never get a Google phone, thanks to my area being pretty much dominated by AT&T and Alltel (soon to be Verizon) and none of them want anything to do with such an open operating system on their phones. We've got Sprint and T-Mobile here, but the coverage isn't very good.

My contract is up in December and was looking for a new phone. I don't need a smart phone but would like to have one. I've been thinking about getting the Dash with the Wing being my second choice. Like I said, my wife sent me a link about it yesterday so I didn't know it existed. I guess I have a couple of months before I really have to decide.

I wouldn't use it as a media player either, I have a Zune for that.

I'd wait a bit before splashing out on an Android handset. First gen hardware with a first gen untested OS is a tad too risky for me.

I wouldn't use it as a media player either, I have a Zune for that.

Don't bother with the Dash, the wing has more support as in 3rd party with a ton of custom roms from the xda-developer.com site.
