there has been a marked downturn here in the uk....
contract rates have dropped and there are more folks competing for the roles (Certainly in London)
but there have been a few big lay offs in the finance sector so there have been a big glut of folks fighting for jobs....
VirginMedia are laying off 2500 folks shortly so that wont help (tho i expect that to distributed)

Mate of mine took 3months to land a new role follwoing his last contract ending in June... now the summer is always poor and he wasnt prepared to drop his rate... his new role is ok and paying what he wanted..... just took longer to get.....

I know the market rates have dropped in oz (As im currently looking to move there and have watched the rates drop)

that aside if your experienced and know your stuff there is work around.... just toguh for those trying to break into the market......

i will have a secure job here. i feel not great pay but great health and steady job
just training and doing onside IT work. I think my onside IT work will pickup since IT is always neededand I charge less than big outfits

friend of mine who is From Russia lost his job with hundreds others they weregiven
2 weeks to work and may not get their last paycheck but might? it was a company
out of USA or Europe that folded holy **** i said
wtH is going on i feel so bad for them and then i get pissed at all the rich rich people who
make millions like movie starts and i hate them for not helping others very much; amazing
howmuch money is out there and so much money is hoarded! sick!

.... hate to get into this here but its not "the rich man"'s responsibility provide for you. People tend to earn their fortunes on their own and they also tend to give a considerable amount away in the form of charity (bill gates comes to mind here) to people who need it - not to people who are perfectly capable of going out there and earning their own way. To conclude this little rant, i have to say: Give a man a fish, feed him for a day. teach a man to fish, feed him for life. This is a very true statement - and ultimately social programs & welfare for people who do not need it will be a catastrophic failure.

How much is enough...I can live off say 100k a year if i was a million aire the rest
go and build a world with !

agreed and yeah sure we have to do it ourselves but it is nice to help others when they are down
I know in my life Ihave had a few nice people when I was down on myluck and i just feel for people trying to make it ..when I win the lottery 3/4s to help build people and then my net worth
will be 50k

i know it sounds corny but wouldnt it be fun to help people. I know i have been to 3rd world countries and man if you heart dont go out to them you are a rock!

Hmm I'm on the fence with this one, but there is ultimately only going to be one person that helps me work on these certificates to get to where I want to be, and that is...

Me.

I have a lot of great and wonderful people around me who support what I do, but none of them actually help me to do the work - I have to sit down and train, myself.

Let's see if we can't put a bit more perspective on this debate.

It's always in a persons best interest to strive for being able to fend for themselves and take care of their own life, needs, and even family. While there's nothing wrong with helping others, sharing in your own good fortune so to speak, you can't rely on others to take care of you or you might be completely out of luck when there's no one who is willing or able to help you out.

Basically, I always try to help people out when they need it, but I don't count on being helped. If I am helped, then that's an added boost. Sometimes help comes just in the nick of time, sometimes it comes way too late, and sometimes it's not really necessary. It's very much in the spirit of the old saying, "Hope for the best, prepare for the worst".

We cut two network admins today. Headcount reduction to align with strategic business plan or something.

On a positive note, I now get to manage the SAN and pick back up on Cisco switching where I left off 7 years ago.

I'm doing okay and am possibly looking to make a move to a better position.

IT isn't as heavily hit as some other sectors.

I feel that downturn here in the Philippines. The supply and demand of IT jobs here is not balance, there's a lot of Professionals looking for a job and even if you find one that suits your skills your gonna be competing with hundreds of applicants for just one position. You maybe alarmed of what you experience in the US but I tell you it's far more frightening here if you think for your IT career in the future. Discrimination is worse here, some companies do require a photo in your resume that it's like their looking for a model (or maybe a discreet partner) they do apply age limit when posting advertisement which is in my opinion a pure bullshit company policy. It seems I'm in trouble, it's been over half a year that I'm unemployed. I think moving in another country would be the best solution if not my only option. I think I'm not the only one with this, maybe some good guys out there may want to share their opinions. Thanks!

I see there are plenty of jobs for UNIX, the demand is more than the number of expertise, and the payment is great.

I work for the local council, in a school, and I feel that my job is safe. Before this I worked for a small privately owned company with three retail stores, and shortly after I left they consolidated all three shops to one small location - so it turned out to be a good move.

In the UK there is also a very good pension scheme for local authority workers (no pension scheme at the old job, not even sick pay), so I'm relieved that I left my old job when I did, I know for a fact that they are struggling now! I couldn't visualize not working in IT any more!

I feel for anyone working in a contracted or short-term position, as their positions must surely be precarious to some degree...

Many fortunes are also made thanks to the collective effort of people within organisations. Very few are made by individuals working in isolation. They are however often well publicised and rightly so as this provides example and motivation to others. In many cases though even with the best will in the world forces conspire against people to 'make it on their own'. It just isn't practical in a lot of cases. What those people require is a job and there is nothing wrong with that. In fact it may be the best way for them to be productive and attain success. It also helps the rich investors and company owners too.
