Have you tried a loopback plug? Granted you can't give it an IP address but it will light an access port up if it works...

I want a device with a "fix all problems" button. Kind of like one of those easy buttons but real.

You want a self-contained VM running on a USB Flash drive. U3 Smart Drives may have something close to that.

The trick is that you don't want to boot off the Flash drive. You want to just stick it in a USB port and have Windows' PnP report that a new, networked device with it's own hostname and IP has suddenly appeared in your Windows Network.
