I work with morons!!!

I work with two morons at my job. Actually I don't really work with them. One is the "technology Coordinator" icon_scratch.gif the other is his assistant. They are the ones that are beween the IT department (us) and the enemy (users).

They try to implement new technology into our institution and let me just tell you they are dumber then a rock but make $$$. icon_scratch.gif

I'm just going to tell you one of the millions of retarted things these morons try to do.

One, wants to put an HPLaserjet 4200 on a 5ft. file cabinet. Now think about this. How are people going get their print-outs??? 5ft. cabinet plus the printer is an additional 2ft. that means you need to clear around 7ft. to get to your print job. Go figure...

The other !diot wants to have the eletrical outlets where some computers go changed a full 180 degree turn...(the outlets were just installed about a month ago) by our eletricians...they are not going to have that. What's the reason to make this change...he doesn't like the way it looks.

I really want to bring these two !diots in the server room and give them a smack down.

Just proves that people with double masters degrees are not that bright. icon_mad.gif

Does anyone here have the same problem I do??? Work with a bunch of retarts.

hehehe too funny. I know what you mean though, I work for a big corporation and I was having PC problems of constant rebooting. (I don't work in the IT dept yet icon_mad.gif ) so I had to call IT.

I told them that the PS was going bad and to bring me a new one. But since I'm supposedly a moron EU I didn't know what I was talking about. So they used Ghost to reimage the machine thinking that it was a software problem. Guess what ... reboots kept happening, I called them back and they sent an IT tech over to my desk and did all this crap I've already done (Checked the event viewer, ran chkdsk, blah blah blah). He decided to upgrade my bios ... couple of days later it was still doing it so they just decided to replace my machine.

2 days after replacing the machine, they called me and told me that the PS was bad after testing it. icon_mad.gificon_mad.gificon_mad.gif . Idiots icon_lol.gif

I had my share of incompetent co-workers who got away with being incompetent, but...
the IT department (us) and the enemy (users).
is not a useful attitude either. Treat users as if they were your customers and your work should be a bit more fun...

My point here really is that the people that make the big $$$ can't figure out some thing very simple or use common sense to figure out that somethings will just not work. IE. putting a 2ft. laser printer on top of a 5ft. cabinet. crash.gif

I love my users...they feed me and bring me things, but you do have a few that think anything can be done which in reality is not true.

    TeKniques,

As for your little issue with your PC and IT. I agree they should of done some extensive diagnostics on your PC. I've been in the IT field for almost 10 years now and I have seen poor judgment made by IT staff.

If you read my original post I never really said anything bad about the users...I was talking about the Staff in between IT and the users. icon_wink.gif

At my previous job I also worked with a couple of idiots. They were "Project Managers". Geez, just thinking about them and how much they were charging (and still are as the job represents a cash cow and they're milking it for all its worth) makes me sick. My job was to assist in web development on small projects as well as play a role as quality assurance testing. I did the testing for the project that these two way over paid inexperienced masters degree arrogant jackasses were working on.

They attempted to conceal they're lack of skill, knowledge, experience, etc., with attitude. I don't know how many times that they attempted to make it seem as though their way was better than ways suggested by the developers only to have to later follow the suggestions presented by the developers as the end user wasn't happy with the product of the original designs. Whats really pathetic in these cases is that these project managers would twist the truth and somehow place the blame on the developers for these failures.

SICK. Made me so darn sick. I'm still in contact with one of the developers and she told me that they're still working on the same project. This project has been going on for about two and a half years now. Its a job that should have taken about 6 months. Certainly no more than a year.

So much time wasted because of their horrible management.

I will say something about the annoying people that I once had the misfortune to work with. They gave me a greater appreciation for that movie "Office Space". Very funny stuff.

Dilbert (the comic strip) hits on this stuff really well sometimes.

I too have worked with some dumb icon_rolleyes.gif IT people in my time!

An IT guy picks up a ticket for a printer problem, the ticket says "no one in the department can print to the printer".

    What would you check 1st?

Wouldn’t you first check the physical connection of the power and the network lead to make sure all are properly secure?

After 1 week messing about with the printer and users unable to print. I told my colleague I will take a look at the ticket. I came back within 5 mins icon_wink.gif and he was like “What was it?” I was like “The network lead wasn’t plugged in”. icon_redface.gif

Now tell me is that not dumb? I just couldn’t understand why he could not fix it? I mean what is the 1st rule of troubleshooting? Some people, I don’t know how they made it….

I know its slightly off the point of the original post but here's a funny thing that happened while I was doing my 216 exam...

I was at my local test center and struggling big time icon_scratch.gif , so my attention was fading and I was seeking inspiration from the celing. A guy was escorted into the exam room, seated next to me and had his exam set up ready to go. After about five minutes, I could see him panicking since his terminal had gone blank. He went out, came back with the moderator and after a few minutes was up and running again. This happened several times. I gave up on my exam, finished and left while the terminal was being fixed for a fourth time.

As I was leaving (while looking at my miserable score), I asked the moderator what was wrong with the guys machine. He said nothing, the problem was that the first question of his test was "You are a desktop technician and want to shut down a computer, what should you do?", but rather than click the multiple choice answer, yep... he kept clicking Start and Shut Down!

I never saw the guy again but I guess an alternative career (or a career in management icon_lol.gif ) might be appropriate!

Hmm..., but my job title is IT manager icon_sad.gif

My old boss replaced the tiled-ceiling with 1 large dry-wall in the server room to make it somewhat air tight for the new FM200 fire supression system. The server door was replaced with some sort of automatic closing mechanism that had this rubber/metal plate drop down to prevent air leaking under the door incase of a fire.

Well, let's just say - adding up the costs of all the servers and network equipment in the room was about half the cost of his fire suppresion system implementation. nice way to spend our budget, eh?

    It doesn't stop there.

All the PC servers sat nicely on a 'server workbench' of sorts. i.e. 4 posts with a bottom shelf, mid shelf for monitor/keyboard, and top shelf for accessories/manuals/etc...

Boss decided to take disaster prevention one step further since his fire supression project was such a huge success - lets look at earthquakes. He brought in straps, the kind you'd find to tie things down on a pickup truck, and had use literally wrap & loop around the PC boxes to prevent it from falling off the bench.

All I can say is, he was the boss (pay raises rest on his shoulders), so I made sure those straps were nice and tight! icon_lol.gif

There are a lot of politics and ego to work in the IT dept. Case in point - I've got a guy in Calif who is a "desktop administrator" who corrects you anytime you refer to him as a technician. "I have earned the title of 'engineer'." What a jerk.

Bottom line is no one wants to be shown up by another tech, and certainly not by a user. And when you let a user know they are right it could encourage them to fix things in the future.... bad news.

What I try to do is whenever a user offers the correct solution, I tell them that "it's very possible", but then check something else that could be related to it. That gives them the satisfaction of being right, but also let them know that it could be quite a bit more complicated.

    Users fixing PCs = bad

When suggesting a fix for another tech, the best way to start the sentence is "You might wanna try..."
I'm not a complete idiot... some parts are missing.

Been there, done that! I have about 30 years of work experience, mostly diagnostic service related jobs and have encountered quite a few incompetent, overly paid, egotistical, retardo's.

The fact is, either you have a high degree of mechanical/diagnostic mentality or you don't. Working next to book savvy, degree educated intellectuals that don't have a lick of common sense, may be amusing, but not very helpful.

I would say a lot of fortunate individuals just fall into the click, either through "who they know" or how much of a "BS artist" they are, and make enough money for several, devoted "backbone of the company type" workers. Sometimes life just isn't fair............................

Thought I best post sommit before HÆLLRÆZOR murders the thread. :D

Heres a question for you all. My boss, t*!t and a half, but he's the boss. Well, hes not the boss, but he has all the boss duties till he's proven himself. anyways, If a user phones me, and I say "ill be right there" because im not busy i get up and head for the door. But, that bald headed usless MF says "stop, you dont need to do that, do it next week". I could do the job in less than 2 minutes, but he stops me everytime. He knows im the only person that can take his job, so he's making the entire company not rely on me.

so, what should I do? Should I just go the Big Boss and get the wh0re fired for gross misconduct? I just dont like not getting along with people. Plus I pitty him. I've been working here for only a few months, and I already know more about the network/users/computers than his 4 years have taught him.

Let us know which way I should kill him. Maybe I could record it and broadcast it for every technician who hates there boss.

    Respect to the Webmaster.

Here another one for you. One of my co-workers was at his site trying to fix a network issue. The issue was the user could not get online, "No network". My co-worker after days of no being able to fix the problem calls my boss and tells him he thinks there's a problem with the PC. So my boss calls me and sends me over there to see what's the problem with the PC. Mind you it has been about a week since this issue was going on. I got there and checked the connections. Everything looked fine nothing was lose. What's the next logical thing you should do??? Yup you got it right...check the Cat5 cable. I installed a new Cat5 cable and guess what...PC went online user was Happy everything was great.

It took a week for this problem to get resolved. Why because he failed to check the basic things. crash.gif

Here's another one. Same guy different time. crash.gif

He's at the same site in one of the wiring closets trying to patch in a Access Point. He calls me and says, "The AP is not working...I patched it in but it doesn't work." I then go over to his site and go to where the AP is, no connectivity...I then go over to the wiring closet to where he patched in the AP. I looked and Immediately found the problem. Here's what bright eyes did. crash.gif He disconnected on of the redundant links back to the main office and plugged in the AP. Mind you the switch is a Cisco 3550 (4icon_cool.gifport switch with about 10 free open ports. crash.gif Why didn't he patch the AP on one of the free ports got me.

In my company we tell the techs to NEVER, EVER!!! disconnect anything from the last 2 ports on a switch unless told too. They may serve a special purpose in this case it was a redundant link. Well the reason why the AP did not work was because the port was configured as a trunk back to the 6509 in the office.

After I undo what he did and connect the AP to an open port everything works everyone is Happy.

When I saw what he did I wanted to drop kick him. crash.gif

So since I am a contractor that makes me a moron? icon_evil.gif you are very misinformed and very ignorant.

I am going to have to separate contractors into 2 different groups

One group is the morons - these are the contractors whom become contractors because they lost their full time job and couldnt find a new job. They usually hop from company to company and russle so much stuff around nobody realizes the bad decisions until its too late and they are gone. This isnt necessarily a computer contractor.

The other group is good skilled contractors. These guys rather work for themselves and enjoy working on different projects. They probably have a higher degree of motivation and continued learning to stay up to date with their field.

On another comment above - project managers! I have to agree that these guys are paid the big bucks, potentially manage an IT project and in my experience are complete morons when it comes to technology. They end up bumbling around in the project manager meetings and promise all kinds of IT things, then come over to you and say make it happen. Then you struggle to meet the non technical project managers description and goals, and then of course, they take the credit for a job well done, since they "organized it".

Working in a project manager situation IMO just sucks. I rather work in an IT department that has direct contact with the decision maker and paycheck giver :D i.e. the real boss, not some middle management

as for contracting i love it.. every contract i have worked over the past 18 months .. have all loved me, found my work to be exceptional, and most try to get my whenever they have a project open (even if i don't have a solid understanding). due to the fact that i'm able to adapt and grasp the work quickly. i would hope that anyone that has worked with contractors understand 2 things

    1. the good ones are hard to get b/c they are always working due to the demand

    2. the bad ones are either disgruntled about losing a cushie job or are brand new to the game and don't know jack other than i managed to pass the cert test

I worked on a project like this in S. Korea it was horrible. The so called project engineer was probably making about 250k on this project and he was a freaking idiot. I mean come on, who the hell calculates rack space in inches? Nobody we techs do it in Rack units. That was just one of the idiotic things he did. I would tell you more about it but it would just put me in a bad mood.

Eh.. I have no complaints with my project manager. He's taught me quite a bit... actually had the fix for an issue with the Citrix client when I replaced some machines remotely earlier this week (won't see the local printers unless the driver names are the same as on the host... sigh). I guess I'm doing okay as a contractor... I'm constantly asked to do side projects.

Having said that.. I have worked with plenty of contractors who don't give a crap about anything but the paycheck. I understand the thinking, but I just don't agree with it. Better work gets you more work, and you never know when an opportunity will open up for you based on your work ethic.

I work for a small town PC repair shop consisting of myself, another Tech who does mostly printers, a salesmen, and the Owners (husband and wife).

For one, they have very shady biz practices, and have no idea how to cover it up. There are vendors that require us to have a certified tech on hand, like Apple, Epson, Dell, etc. They continue to use the old logins as if those techs are still here.

Also, they're freaks. They rip people off day and night, yet whine the second anyone pushes back. They're happy to send lots of weird policies down the pipe, but won't deal with a long term customer who wants an answer why a policy has changed.

Oh well, in May I'm leaving the state anyway, and going back home to CO. Hopefully I can find better work there.

I've always been mystified by incompetence in organizations and why people who are obviously true idiots, or just plain out LAZY, continue to be employed---even when their reputations for being dolts is well known! Its staggering sometimes.

What may be even more puzzling is why management tolerates it. I wonder if people are just reluctant to go through the whole process of telling someone they're fired? This may be the biggest reason fools are kept on.
