T1 P2P with T1 crossover cable...

I know, I don't mean to wear out my welcome but I would like to have the booth review this play (i'm calling a timeout while throwing in my final challenge flag for this week on the field)...

I'm still working to get a T1 connection going... I'm down to just two routers, both with the WIC-T1DSU v2 card.

R1 - 2801
R2 - 1841

I'm connecting the T1 cards with my fourth "homemade" T1 crossover cable.

I just 'wr er' and reload and did the simple setup and assigned an IP address. There are NO errors (only one green light on the card) and both routers state that the serial and line protocols are up.

However, I still can't ping my local IP address on either machine - let alone the remote IP.

Would you be kind enough to glance this over...? It's got to be something simple.

Wow, unbelievable. I can't believe I didn't catch that but I'm also surprised that I never came across that in anything I was reading. Where's my Router 101 class at?

Of course, having a bad T1 card and a few bad cables didn't help much either... So after changing cables, the card, and removing the above commmand and LO and BEHOLD, it's UP!!

I know, it's stupid to get excited over something so easy but I can't help it!

Q1) Why do you suppose that they made 'no ip routing' a default command? I did a 'wr er' and a reload and sure enough, there it is...

Q2) When wouldn't you want IP routing enabled? I don't remember having this problem when doing my ethernet labs. Hmm...

Congrats on the job!

I have no idea why they have no ip routing enabled by default on the newer routers. A coworker of mine was trying to do some labs for his CCVP with some 2800 series routers the other day. He was at it for a few hours cursing up a storm before he finally asked me for some help. I asked him for a show ip route and it was empty so I knew the problem right away. I finally convinced him to go for the CCNP or at least get some routing and switching knowledge down too.

I think that the simple setup puts "no ip routing" in. Not many people use it, which is why it's not a particularly common problem.

I would suggest avoiding it in the future.

I'll be responsible for about 100 servers in lower Maryland... more of an administrator than an engineers job, but I was starting to get desperate after three months/300+ resumes later.

kalebksp - Yes, you are correct. I was doing the simple setups when blowing them away and reloading them.

Is that like buying a new car and telling it not to start? I'll take your advice and stay away from it in the future.

One last thing in case anyone else reads this and they are troubleshooting thier serial or T1 connections with a crossover...

I thought I was dealing with a bad T1 card and/or bad cables...

It was actually a bad WIC slot on a 2801 router. I moved the card and cable from serial0/1/0 to serial0/3/0 and everything worked like a charm the first time.

This is my first experience with a bad slot so I thought it might help someone else one day.

BTW, for the gurus, is it possible to repair a WIC slot in a 2801 router?

Doubt it. The router is all on one big PCB. If the actual slot is dead then sending it back to Cisco is probably the best solution...

From the Cisco Web Site:

The Cisco 2801 offers 4 interface card slots where 2 out of these 4 slots are HWIC slots, 1 slot is a WIC/voice/WIC (VWIC)/voice interface card (VIC)-only slot, and the final slot is a voice-only VWIC/VIC slot. Additionally, the Cisco 2801 offers 2 AIM slots, but does not have network module slots.

I'm guessing you found the WIC slot on your 2nd try
