Work Attire....Curious

I am curious to what everyone's work attire is in the IT field. I am making a career change and in my current job its button ups and dress pants. What do you wear on the job.

The IT's in my school system wear polos. But, at the hospital it seems that anything goes. (seen a guy wear a T-shirt and khaki shorts)

The dress code here is casual but I still wear a button-down and slacks. Except on Fridays of course, then I wear a button down and jeans.

It's just the way I am. Besides, I'm young (20 years old) and I figured I wouldn't be taken seriously otherwise.

Here it's "business casual" and on Fridays we have blue jean day. I despise blue jean day. Part of my job description is that I also help with building maintenance and my boss always holds off on doing stuff until it's blue jean day. So I end up getting all sweaty & nasty moving filing cabinets around and other fun assorted tasks!

Business Casual here. We have no policy at my company, but most of my co-workers try to be professional....or should I say 'try to look' professional.

The only time I wear Blue Jeans to work is if I really need to do laundry.

Dress code here is slacks and collared shirts (button down or polo) and casual Fridays. I always wear button downs personally though. The only thing I don't do is tuck in my shirt unless I have some kind of high profile meeting. Tucking in my shirt drives me crazy for some reason, not enough freedom I guess.

It's funny, I was just thinking about starting a similar thread.

I work for the college I am attending and they have "business casual" for all departments which is mainly dress khakis and button down/polo with the jeans casual on Friday.

Anyone heard the saying, "Dress for the job you want, not the job you have."

Always thought that was a good quote. But I agree with paintb that when you are younger you need to dress a little better to be taken serious.

I have to wear a suit every day but certain IT staff have an exception regarding a tie.

at my job, you cant wear shorts...well thats what they say, but then again, i've seen a few pplz rockin shorts...other than that, its anything goes...as long as your dressed...

I work in a factory (doing IT)

I can wear whatever I want.

Even sweatpants if I wanted too

At the school where I work there's a no-denim policy, so I wear trousers and an open-necked shirt. My two managers wear full business attire but they don't have to go crawling around under desks and in wiring cabinets like me!

It's fun to see them sweating it out in the Summer while I bask in the cool atmosphere of the air-conditioned server room, however!

I work in a factory and I can wear whatever I want to as well.

However, I choose to wear business casual clothing to look better than all the other co-workers that wear t-shirts and look like crap. No matter what you say, IT is almost always about looking good if you want to be noticed. Since you can't show off your DNS replication skills to the CIO/CTO then you need to show off your dress, your ability to keep things clean, and other good physical traits.

I work in a Medium sized IT environment. Pretty much Mon-Thus shirt\polo and dress pants. and We have casual Fridays where as long as its tidy anything goes

Its business casual here as well. Only time we were permitted to wear jeans was when we moved offices over a two day period.

It used to be that, as long as I wore pants, my employers and coworkers were happy. Now that I work for a video game developer, nobody seems to notice.

Our atmosphere is a business casual environment... having said that we wear khakis and a polo or jeans and a polo. I was actually half joking half seriously scolded my first day when I came in wearing some dress pants, a button down shirt and a tie. So it's generally khakis or jeans and a polo shirt, usually not tucked in.

We just wear whatever to work. We don't have clients in the office so anything goes. I typically wear cargo shorts, a button up, and flip flops. When I am on-site with a client it's tie and jacket for sure.

I've never subscribed to the "dress for the job you want, not the job you have" mentality. if you perform it doesn't matter what you wear. Just be clean about it and it's all good. Not shaving or brushing your teeth will get you more grief than not wearing business casual.

I can wear whatever I want to work, thankfully.

Our office is quite laid back. The owner of the entire company always wears jeans, boots, usually a button up shirt and a cowboy hat.

We do a lot of work for plants (coal, electric, etc.) and I'm often in environments where I have the potential to get dirty, so I wear jeans and whatever shirt to work.

It's nice, honestly.

I never minded "dressing up" for work when I had to, though.

I wear dress pants and the tuxedo t-shirt...because it says "I wanna be formal, but I'm here to party!"

But currently working at a movie theater doing night work/maintenance so it's anything goes...

Dress shirts (not tucked) or polo's with jeans and black-top semi casual shoes. Friday's are casual, but I still wear what I normally wear throughout the week, so no change on my part. Just feels more sensible to me, IMHO, even when everyone else is running around in t-shirts and shorts. When I have to deal with clients, I would wear dress shirts and slacks, tucked with a black leather belt and black-top semi casual shoes.

I wear jeans and a fleece sweater usually. I work in a casino and occasionally have to get under a bar to check wiring, so khakis won't work.

I work in the corporate headquarters of a large company. Most people have a business casual policy. I work night shift. We can't wear shorts or open toe shoes but anything else is fine.

I work in IT at an accountancy firm.
We do outsourced IT support for a number of small firms too.

I have to wear a suit with tie Monday to Thursday, and can take the tie off on Friday.

If we are doing weekend work and the office is closed, I'll come in in jeans, T-shirt and trainers.

I work for a University in Miami...swimsuits all they way. I spend half the day sitting at the beach on my laptop sipping away my pina-coladas, watching the freshmen sorority girls wrestling in the mud...

I am not sure what out written business attire is, although I was ribbed a bit during my interview for wearing a full suit+tie.

I maintain a business appearance, slacks, button down, the occasional tie. The only problem with the tie is every time I wear one at least one person asks if I have an interview over lunch for that day. My daughter likes to get me ties, and I feel obligated to wear them every so often, so I put up with the riff raff for her.

Everyone else in my department seems to wear whats available, except my group manager. He at least wears a polo and the occasional button down.

For my work its khakis or jeans and polo or button down shirts, no shorts. On Fridays we can wear regular t-shirts.

I usually wear jeans unless I have a meeting because often times I crawl underneath desks and they can be pretty dirty sometimes.
