How far is your commute?

meadITmeadIT Member Posts: 581 ■■■■□□□□□□
I think I've been spoiled. For the past 4.5 years, I've had a 8 mile / 12 minute commute to work. Now that I'm keeping an eye/ear out for a new job, I'm starting to dread having to commute. I currently live in a small rural town and it looks like I'm going to have to commute to the bigger nearby cities...anywhere from 35 to 60 miles one way.

How far is your commute and how bad is it to make that drive 10 times per week?

My current drive is 25 mile and takes 45 minutes with traffic and 30 minutes without.

Just like you, I had a job once were it took 20 minutes to get there. I miss the commute by not the job. I have also used public transportation here in the DC area and It's a great way to get around.

Just keep these things in mind....Time, fuel, wear on the car. What does it mena to you and does the increase in the job (money and\or gaining experience) cover these costs.
And in conclusion your point was.....???

Don't get so upset...it's just ones and zeros.

My commute is a 10 minute walk around the corner and through the park and wallah! im at work :D!!!...not that im trying to rub it in of course ;)

but seriously, theres no way i could drive 100+ miles per day for work. i would rather relocate. Besides the petrol cost in the UK would be stupidly high.

8 Miles right now. Soon to be 4.5 after we move into our newly purchased, old, home here in Bakersfield.

When I was in Reno it was about 4 miles also.

A lot of folks actually drive over the Grapevine from Bakersfield to L.A. every day. A 90 plus mile commute each way. Its starting to make more sense again since you can buy a house here in Kern County for about a fourth of the cost as in L.A. county. For awhile there during the height of the Housing bubble the price of a house here was Ridiculously Over-priced!

My commute is similar to yours, though it takes about 25-30 minutes to get here if school is in session. There's about three different ways to get here, and all of them go by a school. If school is out, I'm here in about 15 minutes.

How come? I'd consider getting a bike in that scenario.

30 minutes to work, but I do field support, so I spend the day driving from site to site...I don't like sitting in one place, but sometimes I feel very tired at the end of the day

20 minutes and loving it! No freeway, just main roads. Much more peaceful and shorter distance than my old job (45-100 minute drive)

I think we had this same thread last year.

55 miles to work = 45-50 mins, it's all freeway with no congestion. Driving 110 miles everyday sucks, but I have got used to it.

10 minute commute depending on traffic.

I think I would try to move if my commute was 30 minutes or longer. Especially with all the snow we've been getting here lately, I'd freak out.

    20-25 minutes through the country..

I think 45, maybe 50 minutes would be my limit regardless of mileage, that limits me somewhat if I continue to live where I do, but there has been enough around here when I needed to find work that it hasn't been a problem yet.

30-35 mins with no traffic for a 23 mile commute. When its snowing and people forget how to drive since last snowstorm? Add 2 hours to that trip.

Now that the girlfriend has a job close to mine, we car pool so it makes the time and distance go quicker. We are also thinking about moving more towards that side of town next year.

About 13 miles and 35-45 minutes each way, and most of that is on I-75 around Atlanta.

15 minutes walk or 5 minutes bicycle ride, but if I cycle (which is most days if there is no ice on the roads) I tend to go the long way for the exercise. I can actually see the school where I work from my block of flats because it is situated on a local high point!

When I got this job I sold my car and paid off all my debts with the proceeds, because I lived so close - best thing I've ever done.

Conversely I can see my flat from certain aspects of the school, which makes me wish I was at home!

5 mins for the part time job I have. But when I was with ICE I had about a 2 hour drive on highways. The situation was basically if I didn't leave by 4:30am and get there by 6:30 am I would be late for an 8 am start time. Other jobs were generally 15 mins, which was nice.

I'm only 7 miles away, about 15 minutes. My wife's school is about 2 miles farther than my work so we carpool 3 days a week. It's pretty slick!

Why would someone sit in traffic for 40 mins over a 3 mile commute? You could walk it in that time icon_rolleyes.gif

And then some people wonder why Americans are so fat and global warming is such a problem.....
