Networking over Administration

I'm just curious why people usually go from administration servers to networking, and not reverse ?

Does people when working let's say 5 years with servers does they get quickly satiate, and because of that they want to change direction in IT ?

Because some people start loving networking more, after years with servers ?

Because it brings refreshment in their lives ?

There are less "high level" Cisco guys than Microsoft guys. There is no Microsoft equivalent to the CCIE. The bottom line is that no matter how big your MS domain is, you still need a network to support it.

I have to say I've seen networking positions get higher salaries than systems, but that's not always the case. In my opinion, Microsoft salaries have gone down, but not all systems salaries. I've found UNIX/Linux engineer salaries to be very similar to network engineer salaries in my searches, but that's not to say it's representative of any large trend.

Has anyone seen that highly experienced networking personnel get paid more, yet highly experienced systems personnel have higher job ceilings within companies? It seems that way to me, but again that's in my limited experience.

I went the reverse, but not by choice. I personally find what Paul said to hold true- there's a ton of MS guys I know, and literally only a couple that could hold their own in the network realm..and out of those, only a few who truly understand the technology they work on. I guess it comes down to personal preference.

I have not observed that. In all of my work experience the guys with serious networking backgrounds were the top dogs.

Well I do know in my job search my lack of Cisco experience has been holding me back. Pretty much every job that has rejected me cites either me not being local, me not having Cisco experience, or both.

So what are you going to do about that ?

For example if you don't like Cisco, and you are just a cool server guy

, will you go for it anyway because it will bring you more money and better position in the company ? (this is question for all)

I don't think I can agree with this. I would say the MCA program is just as difficult and on the same playing field if not a little more difficult to obtain.

Not only do you have to pass quite a few exams and labs, you also have to go before a review panel of other MCAs to determine whether or not you are qualified.

Assuming that we're talking about IT service provider, then it depends on the company itself. If they sell a lot of MS products, then the experts in MS get good payment.

But I have to say that due to the large number of MS people, they tend to get less.

I've seen the most payments go to SAN admins, UNIX admins, and CCIEs.

and also DB consultants, like Oracle , SAP, siebel...so experts get the most payment, certified or not it doesn't matter in the long run.
