Error Code 2

BokehBokeh Member Posts: 1,636 ■■■■■■■□□□
I have a remote user, who cannot connect to the internet this morning. We have tried the usual steps - reboot the computer, dsl modem, repair the connection, etc. The connect will not repair, saying tcp/ip error. Cannot complete ipconfig as XP says unsupported command. Tried doing a ping to the internal network card and get "Cannot connect IP driver, error code 2." I cannot find anything online on this error code.

I will be going to his office this afternoon, but was looking for some things to try in the mean time that I can suggest over the phone since I cannot get into his computer remotely.

Try the winsock repair tool. When I worked ISP tech support years ago it fixed tons of problems like you're describing.

    1) delete the NIC and install
    2) winsock repair (google it)
    3) Is the indicated on the NIC blinking?

don't delete the nic and reinstall it - run the winsock fix tool first. 99% of the time reinstalling the hardware isn't necessary, as you are experiencing a software related problem.

Well that @#$%$^&* computer still didnt work after applying the fix mentioned above. Even deleted the driver and reinstalled a new one, tried even repairing XP to no avail. Brought it back to the office and the boss says "Oh just take one of the other spares and give him that one instead. He is due for a new one." UGH! So since it was close to closing time, Ive got both machines here at the house. Figure since I dont get overtime, I might as well be comfortable moving programs and files over.

Pop in a linux livecd and see if it works just to cross it being a hardware problem off the list.
