Sun and Hewlett-Packard announced an expanded multi-year partnership agreement for HP to distribute and support Sun's Solaris 10 OS. The top five x86/x64 based system vendors now all ship Solaris with their systems. HP is responding to customer demand for expanded OS support on HP ProLiant server and blade platforms.

you seem very annoyed from my posts, I don't understand why lol

no I don't work for Sun, I just found these news interesting, specially that I find a lot of members here unaware of Sun products and work in general that's all ;)

Nah. I was just wondering why you were posting press releases thats all. Sorry if I offended you.

The last experience I had of Sun gear was way back in the pizzabox days.

    no it's ok :)

Sun is trying to highlight the progress they're achieving, specially during this time of depression. I think they're doing pretty well.

Tough time for most of the big server vendors to be honest. They've got huge competition from the cheap x86 server crowd now. It is getting hard to compete on price/performance when Intel and AMD have such huge R&D budgets and such a large market. Sun are one of the few vendors left that actually design and make their own processors. Their CoolThreads architecture seems pretty good if your workload is many smallish requests at once.

Yes I worked a lot with the cooling threads (T2000, T5220, ..etc) and they're very good products. Excellent products actually, I haven't seen a single failure.

Also Sun teamed up with FujitsuSeimens to produce the Mx000 series servers, which are excellent for serious heavy multi-tasking applications.

And about the X64/X86, if you see the last post about the internet sites, they actually purchased Sun's x4100 which is X64/86 architecture based servers. Some companies are willing to pay extra cash for Sun's X64 servers just for the sole purpose of support. I have seen a lot of deployments for Windows OS on them, and customers are happy with the support they get.

And with Solaris being open source, we will be seeing more migrating from Linux to Solaris to get better support, and to use the new features (containers, self-healing file system zfs, ..etc).

    let's see how things go..
