VTP help with packet tracer

I take the CCNA next month and i am having some issues with 3 2950 switches all running STP. I have sw0 set up as vtp server with ccna as domain. sw1 and sw2 are clients and show vtp status says that it is getting all the correct info HOWEVER show vlan still shows all fa ports in vlan1. Why is the vlan info not propergating vorrectly?

Did you assign any ports to a vlan other than vlan 1? VTP doesn't automatically assign ports to vlans.

I thought that was the whole point to vtp so i dont have to configure every bloody thing. LOL i guess i am wrong. let me try that out and ill let you know. thanx for the reply

VTP just populates the vlans to the switch. You still have to assign the ports to the vlans. How the hell would VTP know which vlan you wanted a port to be in?

It would know by examining the current configuration and then what ever info it needs to send it to the other switches. VTP could look at the current running config and depict that ports 1-5 are in vlan 2 by examing certain keywords or syntax.

That sounds logical and thats what i thought it was doing. But i was wrong. Cisco press doesnt really explain VTP all that well nor does it explain troubleshooting tips for vtp

If it examined the current config the ports would already have to have been assigned to that vlan by yourself (or who ever configured the switch). When you think VTP think vlan database not port assignments.

I thought the Cisco Press books did a great job of explaining VTP personally. That is where I learned it.

Hmm, im using the cisco netacad books from almost 2.5 years ago. Switching and intermediate routing. I have encountered a vtp troubleshooting question on a practice exam and i cant find the answer in the book.

In order for correct vtp propegation, do version numbers have to be the same? Thats my question

All switches in a VTP domain have to be running the same version.

i figured out what was going on. packet tracer had a hard time with vtp and stp with vlans. so i deleted the switches and did it all manually and it works great.. Thanx
