Anyone run their own business here?

Anybody run an IT shop, or their own consulting firm or something like that? Please give (general) details about what it does, size, and how you made it work.
I used to co-own a small web design business in Dallas, TX. We tried to build a customer base around the small mom-and-pop shops, but discovered that this market was too small to support our setup. We closed our little business and moved on. I'd still like to own my own company sometime.

i own a very very small consulting firm in lexington KY. Only have like 4 clients at the moment but do not have my business license from the state of KY yet. It is just something while i go to school but plan on expanding when i finish school and getting my license from the state of KY to officially own it. -

I run an IT consulting business. Right now I'm focusing primarily on Linux, Unix and network integration type projects. In the past, I was more web development, design and SEO centric, but have now relegated that to a secondary role. I prefer the type of work that I'm doing now, so I mostly just support existing website clients, and am very selective about taking on new ones.
Right now it's a one-man operation for the most part. My wife helps out sometimes with administrative tasks, but other than that, it's just me. I've been doing this full time since I graduated from college in December of 06, and part time for 4 years or so before that.
The best way to get new business is to make sure that you keep your customers happy. All of my customers are either referrals, people I knew already, or those who found me through my website. -
