AD LDS with Microsoft Exchange 2007

in Exchange Server & Office Communications Server Exams
When install Edge Transport Server. It require AD LDS but i don't know exactly the role of the AD LDS in this case. And does AD LDS communicate with AD DS. Thank for any replies
