Which's a good national organization for networking?

Hi everyone. Today in class, I just learned that it's a good idea to become a member of a well-recognized, nation-wide organization so I can network with more people for better career opportunity. What my class does is to help students get ready for the professional world out there when we graduate with our associates. The presenter came to our class today, and he said he was part of this national science organization or whatever it was. He told us once he signed up, he immediately got hook up with a well-respected person in the science community who helped him landed on his first job. So, my instructor was encouraging us to become a member of an organization related to our majors. You see... this class I registered for is actually oriented for business students, and I'm the only computer major in class.

I'm a CompTIA IT Pro member. Got it as a discount for only $40, but it doesn't do me any good since there aren't many members there, and their forums are pretty much dead. I was considering getting Technet Plus subscription to get all the benefits I needed, but $350 is too rich for my blood, and I don't think it's exactly what I'm looking for.

Any suggestion on what organization related to computer networking I should sign up with to get the networking benefits with a reasonable annual fee? I want to put this membership on my resume. If there are no such thing or it's not worth it, then I would not bother and continue to get more certs on the way.

veritas_libertas, thanks. I'm actually planning on getting a BS in Information Security and Forensics after my AAS. So your suggestion was perfect. Still waiting on more ideas.

If you were in the UK, I would say the BCS or the IET. However since your in the US, I would say the NPA or the IEEE, just because the NPA has an agreement with the BCS, and I believe the IEEE an agreement with the IET.
