    Hey, congratulations! icon_thumright.gif

I'm reading the CWTS Official Study Guide right now and will be writing a review of it after I take the exam myself. What did you like most and least about the guide? Did you use the CWTS online practice test too?

Out of curiosity JD, you are already CWNA so why would you even take the CWTS?

Congrats on the pass. I have the book (even though I was grandfathered in) and found it an interesting read.

I was asked to review the CWTS Official Study Guide and blog about it. I'll be commenting on the CWTS exam and online practice test in the same review as well.

I would say that someone with a CWNA needn't get the CWTS unless their CWNA cert is long expired. Wi-Fi technology has changed so much in the last three years that it's worth staying current on your biggest CWNP cert. My CWSP expired last year and I really need to renew it too.

Have you blogged on the CWSP by any chance? I am interested in what is involved with this cert and if I would learn allot from taking it.

    Sorry for hijacking the thread.

Nope, I haven't, but would be glad to do so if asked by the CWNP. If they like my CWTS write-up them maybe the CWSP will follow.

    Hi JD,

Overall I found the CWTS study guide to be excellent. It covers all the exam objectives nicely and is such a nice read compared to some of the horrors I've had to read this year!

The only little thing I would have liked to have seen is the chapters arranged according to the exam objectives.

I got one set of the online practice questions with the book (CWNP website). They are at a level of what you can expect to see in the exam. The questions tend to make you think i.e. what is the best solution or how can this issue be resolved? Then there are a few questions that just ask you to identify technologies etc. You will really do need to be able to understand the material and the study guide helps you achieve this.

    Hope this helps!

I've just bought the book too... it came about 4 days ago. It is one of the best Sybex books I have read, and I've read a few.

One question: how like the online practice test are the 2 practice exams on the CD?

    Cheers

    Hi John,

The practice tests on the CD are a little easier compared to that you will find on the real exam and the online practice tests. If you know and understand the exam objectives you will be fine. The practice tests on the CD do give you a real indication on how you are doing. Hope that helps.

Thanks very much for getting back so quickly, and for the extra information. I'm going to read the parts of the book I feel I need to cram up on one more time, read through my notes and then take the CD exams again, and I reckon I'll be ready.

    Thanks again for your reply.

    Thanks A.

I have booked the exam for 6th November at 10:00am. Not sure it was such a wise move, but I can reschedule if need be.

Did the CD Bonus exam 1 this evening and got 67%. Bit slapdash really, and messed up silly questions.

Decided to take the plunge and buy the Online Practice exam, and took that too. Got 75% although, as you stated above, the Online Practice test did feel harder (different style being one reason).

I think it will be close, but I definitely cannot fault the material if I fail.

    Hi John,

My own experience would be to take the exam when your scoring around 90% on the various practice tests. That being said your at the pass mark. If you need an extra week or more just reschedule it and study hard. I reckon you'll do well. You will know when your ready!

The CWTS exam items are fact-based and focus on "what things are" rather than "how they work." In addition to the prectice tests, I find it really helpful to use a high-lighter to mark the specific facts in the study guide (e.g., the 2.4GHz UNII band is not used in 802.11, patch and panel antennas are practically the same thing, etc.) and study from those.

Thanks to you both A and JD for the advice. I'm highlighting the appropriate areas, and I took the test again earlier and hit a respectable 93% (56/60).

I'm going to keep plugging away at the book, do the end of chapter tests and then save the Practice test (giving me time to 'forget' the answers) a day or two before the real thing. Cheers. :)

Apologies for hijacking this thread by the way... icon_redface.gif

However, just to let you know that I decided late last night to reschedule my CWTS exam to this afternoon.

    And I passed. :D

As you can imagine, I am 'chuffed as chips'.

To re-iterate, I used the CWTS Official Study Guide and I bought the Online Practice Test/exam from CWNP as well.

Without breaking the NDA, I feel that the book and practice test are fantastic, but they do not quite set you up as regards what to expect of the exam questions. The important thing is to make sure that you read and re-read the question.

I now have my CWNA Official Study Guide on order... bring it on!

And thanks to you guys again for the advice.

    Hello John,

Congratulations on passing the CWTS exam. The "make sure that you read and re-read the question" statement is very good advice. There is no reason to rush through the exam as there is plenty of time. Congrats again and good luck with your CWNA studies.
