i have two openings here in San Angelo, TX.
Must have a government security clearance (TS/SCI)
these are entry level helpdesk positions, with very good opportunities to advance. ( i started as a helpdesk tech 4 yrs ago, and am now the lead administrator)

Those TS/SCI clearances are a little hard to get without any military background.

Not true.

As long as you are not in a huge amount of debt, have any felonies, are truthful/honest on the application, and pass the poly, you will pass.

I have had 0 military background, 2 year college degree, etc and I am 22. I am about 14k in debt right now due to student loans, etc. But the thing is.... if you have messed up at all (felonies, etc) your chances dwindle by ALOT.

I was granted a clearance after about an 8 month process.

As far as that security clearance, if you have any drug history past marijuana, "cocaine,meth,bad drugs" ever in your lifetime you can kiss your chance goodbye.

I've never been asked anything of the sort on any of the polygraphs I have done..... its more like have you ever stolen anything from your workplace, have you ever given out confidential information stuff like that....

nothing like did you ever smoke poke and have premartial ***? lol

Something tells me they aren't going to wait 8 months till you get your clearance.

Not only that, but you are not going to be able to get one for yourself.

I know about 10+ people that work with me with no military history that have their TS clearance. It all depends on your employer.

Just curious, but what kind of salary is it?

I have a TS/SCI, but I am active duty Air Force right now, oddly enough working help desk.. I think after four years of help desk it would be time to move up the ladder though, right?

That's if the company is willing to sponsor (pay) for an initial clearance. At my last job if you had an existing one you got preference over somebody who did not have one.

Military goes first in security clearances,

you will wait a MINUMUM of a year to get your top secret,

but its worth it.

and they do ask you, don't believe me google it...

They ask you during the polygraph too..

I was asked on a polygraph about drugs, never tried drugs before so it was a non-issue. Getting a clearance (if you don't have one) always depends on how badly the agency/company wants you. If you have a skill they really need and no clearance they will do the work to get you the clearance. But for helpdesk related position, might be a bit harder because it is a common skillset. Ultimately, like others have said, your background is the true indicator of whether or not you will get a clearance. Honesty on the paperwork will save you, the company or agency a lot of time and wasted dollars.

No, they don't.

Which is why you are employed before your clearance goes through. I still had access to limited areas as long as I was escorted by security, etc etc.

This is why there is a "you must have ___ clearance" or "must be able to obtain ____ clearance".

And, not true about the military thing by the way.

A 20 year USAF vet and myself both went through the TS process together. Mine actually went through before his. He even had his poly before me.

And yes, I was asked about drug use. I was honest on my paperwork and on the interview. I tried it once when I was 14, never touched it again.
