Naming Convention

I recall someone explaining this once but I can't seem to find the explanation anymore. What is the difference between MDF and IDF....like why do they use these naming conventions?

    for me its simple to locate where and what it is.

    I work and have worked for companies with remote locations and huge campuses. its makes it very easy to ID where it is and what type of device it is.

    example one company i worked for had a huge plant and global footprint .. the naming convention was

    1.Location being state= AZ
    2. Site= Phx
    3. type of device= SW
    4. device number = 01 (which would be the number and increment up)

    in other cases if there where 2 sites in the same city it would be the actual site name and additional info could be added in the name
