Windows 7 Dell upgrade

Hope your all having a good day
My sister is home for crimbo and has given me her dell laptop along with a DVD windows 7 upgrade disk, is it possible for me to drop all the partitions then install without entering the KEY as it will detect that there is no OS already installed, then once at the desktop just run setup again but this time entering the KEY, this is a trick that I used when installing Vista Business Upgrade on blank hard drives
Ide much rather do a full clean install and not be upgrading from Vista
also has anyone received a full version of windows 7 from dell, I was quite surprised when I opened the envelope to see the upgrade version
