Which CCIE

Odd question, but for those of you in the UK - would going CCIE Voice be more useful/career aiding than R+S?

I absolutely love learning about Voice - and really want the CCNP wrapped up so I can get on with CCNA:V then CCVP.

However, with both the CCNP and CCVP wrapped up (I'd like to get all this sorted by the end of 2011), the dream is to go CCIE... (ideally twice over R+S and Voice)

Does my plan make any sense?

Go for the one you have a genuine interest in, it's going to be a hard enough slog anyway and if your heart isn't in it 100%....icon_cry.gif
We responded to the Year 2000 issue with "Y2K" solutions...isn't this the kind of thinking that got us into trouble in the first place?

I agree it takes a lot of motivation so go for which ever one interests you the most. I have a hard time studying for the few topics I don't really enjoy. Forcing yourself to go for the track because it will help you career wise would probably do you more bad than good as your motivation to study would be low.

Besides, any CCIE is still a CCIE!

R&S. It's the foundation of everything really. With a CCVP and incremental experience you are more than nicely placed to work in that specialisation, but at the end of the day a router has to get your packet someplace for it to be truely useful. Good luck with it all!

Apologize for hi-jacking the discussion thread but I hope Turgon can provide some suggestion in tackling the new version of CCIE R&S exam.

I would like to combine some lab prep time together with written prep and make the first R&S written attempt in 12-15 months' time.

Just passed the last CCNP test this afternoon.

Then why don't you just start a new thread with the topic suggestion in tackling the new version of CCIE R&S exam icon_rolleyes.gif

Knock out the written before the end of 2010 or you will run out of steam for lab prep. Best advice I can give you. I think maybe 5 people have passed the new version of the lab exam so get cracking!

    Good luck!

I would personally rather have an R&S IE and a CCVP, but I don't want to be a voice engineer.

I think Turgon is speaking sense - at the end of the day a CCIE R+S would be the best to start with :)

Now, do I go CCVP after CCNP, or carry straight on with CCIE.

Somehow, something is telling me getting the CCIE at least started this year (I'm getting married in December) and i'd imagine kids will be happening at some point.......

based on this information. I would aim to get the CCIE written out the way before end of this year. and then look at the lab for 2011. A new wife while supportive at this stage will soon become more important if a new baby arrives any time soon after.
(Of course that assumes you dont have kids between now and the wedding)

ps congrats on the wedding icon_smile.gif (I missed that invite somewhere along the lines.... )
if I say something that can be taken one of two ways and one of them offends, I usually mean the other one :-)

Wise words and am tempted to agree.

So... CCNP -> CCIE: R+S it is then...

Some wise advice there. For my part our firstborn came along 6 months into my CCIE prep so priorities necessarily changed there. Parenting is rewarding and demanding at the same time. Your wife will need lots of support and disappearing into your lab for months on end doesn't always sit well. For our part my wife is from overseas and my family live miles away. I can tell you that any help you get from family and friends however little goes a long way. So get the hard miles in now before you are all stretched at home. Put up a 1st lab attempt thread. It keeps you going :)

After having a discussion with my wife to be last night...

The only proviso was that she could come to Belgium with me when I sit the lab.

Yup, I'm marrying the right one ;)

CCIE this year it is then
