Upgrading to IOS 12 on a Cisco 2514

I just got lucky. A friend gave me a Cisco 2514 router. His employer was cleaning out the data closet and this unit was just gathering dust. Aside from some white paint spots on the top, I fired it up and it works great. I was able to reset the password and I just ordered some transceivers on eBay.

Now, the problem is, this router is running Cisco 11 and as most of you know already, you really need version 12 to learn most of the commands required for the CCNA exam.

I am curious. I have a Cisco 2501 router running version 12.0. I know that Cisco is strict about its software, and I won't do it for the licensing issues, but would the version 12 on the 2501 work on the 2514?

I have posted the sh ver on the 2514 below. It's interesting that it mentions "2500 software." Does this mean that 2500 software will run on all types of 2500 series routers, like the 2501, 2503, 2514, 2520, etc.?

Yes. As long as you have the memory to support the image, it will work.

Your lab is a lot like Las Vegas (or the docks in Jersey). What you do in your lab stays in your lab. If that image from the 2501 "falls off a truck" and onto a TFTP server and winds up on your 2514.....

Assuming you have enough flash and RAM to run it then it should work.
