VLSM example in Odom's ICND2 book...

Maybe someone can help me understand this because as far as I can see this would be a typo wouldn't it? He's adding a subnet with /23 prefix to figure 5-2(pg205) and in table 5-4 where he calculates all the possible subnets he can use he says the fifth subnet will work with range 172.16.8.1-172.16.9.254.


The serial links between between R1/R2 and R1/R3 are using 172.16.9.0/30 and 172.16.9.4/30 subnets.

Am I missing something here?

    i had the same problem... check out CBT Nugget video for CCNA... they explain VLSM simple as pie. Almost positive torrents got it.

    I watched that nugget and I get the idea behind VLSM. It's just that those serial link subnets overlap with the subnet he said will work. Why would that be the right answer?

    Hey there,

    You're comparing the old subnet that he used in 5-2 with the newly created one in 5-4. The old masks don't work anymore, he's creating a brand new batch of /23 all around for each subnet....
