The question had crossed my mind, but I can see WGU's perspective: The upgrade exam is not necessarily going to be a true test of how well you've mastered that material in an academic sense. Sure, it might meet Microsoft's requirements for the cert, but you might only have to be solid on X% of the material in each section to pass and WGU is pushing to have you develop more thorough competency.

Or you taking longer to complete your degree = more money for them in the long run. ;)

Since this is the "Official" WGU thread, I am posting here to 100% confirm what a preexisting MCITP: EA will waive for the BS: Network Design & Management Path.

EDIT: Im laughing at the fact it waived IT fundamentals II and III but not I....wtf?

    What is IT fundamentals I?

So my best math is that I have 54 out of 124 CU's complete, leaving 70 to do. Another 10-16 of those are easy stuff I can blow through. I have lots of math to do (vomit) and 3 English classes. Poo.

Your welcome! I think that TechExams is an excellent resource for WGU students so I have been trying to point them this way. What better resource for online students than to have TechExams to meet and get real IT advice from seasoned IT Technicians?

You can take it up with your mentor if you believe it should transfer. Of course there is no promise that it will change anything.

You prob didn't complete the whole domain for the science.
I saw your transfer sheet earlier, how could they not just give you the foundations? That's just idiotic! Who even recognizes CIW certs, besides WGU?

Yeah it is pretty lame. I don't plan on it taking me more than a couple days review to get a pass though. I only need to look at some of the things that have changed in HTML/XML/XHTML, the rest looks like cake.

I plan to make quick work of Project+ as well.

Guys, guys, guys, lets relax here! These classes are used to help evaluate student's knowledge of an area, not just get them a job. That is the main reason they use all the CIW, and CompTIA certs. They don't want to use as many manufacturer specific certifications because for instance, the courses are meant to evaluate a students knowledge of SQL not Oracle.

I think my thoughts on Fundamentals I are in a post around here somewhere. You likely won't need any review, it's a horribly easy exam.

Agreed. I thought I'd need to review some stuff, but the exam was a piece of cake.

+1 It was my first IT cert and took me 3 weeks..The last week really trying to learn html..not that much html on the test. It was probably my easiest test since I've been at WGU.
My second easiest was the CIW javascript test I took yesterday even though I only scored 82. Most of the questions were just plain easy and then there were about 7 which I had no idea where they got the questions from. Luckily you guys don't have to take javascript.

I need to really look at the objectives for the CIW certs. Everyone keeps saying they are easy...... hopefully I can knock out IT fundamentals 1 and Project + within the first two weeks.

"Your enrollment counselor will go over program requirements with you and give you an idea of what credit might transfer. The official transfer credit evaluation is done by the Student Records office staff . They typically complete evaluations within 3-5 business days of receipt of all of your transcripts. At peak periods just prior to the start of the term, it may take longer, so get your transcripts in early to ensure prompt evaluation. As soon as the evaluation is completed, the evaluator emails you a transfer evaluation with a copy to your enrollment counselor. If you have questions about your transfer credit evaluation, please contact your enrollment counselor."

. . . so you should know within a week. If that's no longer the case, they should update their FAQs.
Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there.

You've got to give WGU (some) credit. At least it's a foundational baseline and the test isn't popular enough for as many people to **** on it. :)

For newbies-- that is, career changers or others new to IT-- it should provide a nice overview of the technologies. I hear it's a lot like the iNet+.

As an aside, some of the assessment schools (e.g. Excelsior) used to give 6 units for the iNet+. 6 units!! That would have been sweet for an easy test most of us seasoned folks could take in our sleep. . . I almost jumped for it at the last, but got too busy that December. Not to mention, even for six credits that was an expensive exam.

Well IMO the Network Design/Management is better than the Network Admin.

    Network Admin Courses:
    AHV1 Directory Services: 70-640
AIV1 Network Design and Management: 70-642
    AJV1 Server Administration: assuming 70-646
    Obtaining MCITP: Server Administrator

    Network Design/Management:

    AHV1 Directory Services: 70-640
AIV1 Network Design and Management: 70-642
    BHV1 Configuring Applications Infrastructure: 70-643
    BIV1 Enterprise Administration: 70-647
    Obtaining MCITP: Enterprise Administrator

Microsoft Learning: Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP)

Can anyone enrolled at WGU look at the AJV1 course and confirm what exam is required? I haven't been able to find a description for the course on WGU's site.

    Just my 2cents ;)

edit: after looking at the MCITP Enterprise cert more, looks like its 5 exams instead of 4?

    I found my mix-up ;)

MCITP: Server Administrator (3 Exams) -
    AHV1: 70-640
    AIV1: 70-642
    AJV1: 70-646

MCITP: Enterprise Administrator (5 Exams) -
    AHV1: 70-640
    AIV1: 70-642
    BHV1: 70-643
    BIV1: 70-647
    ABV1: 70-680

    Weird question.

I noticed that in the kb pdf it shows that an associates clears many requirments. That seems odd, does that always occur? I was wondering because I have an associate of arts in social and behavioral sciens and an associates of sciences in computer information systems (both are very old). I do not have the math level required... but it appears that since it is lower devision it basically gets wiped away. Is this correct?

Oh, and is their an age requirments on education for transfer?

And lastly... would an old (as hills... back in the days when it was all called MIS not IT) AS: CIS count as an AS: IT for transfer credit?

The way I saw it WGU changed it to the courses and/or certs have to be less than 5 years old. Glad it wasn't llike that when I started, mine were 20 yrs. old when I started here Sep 2008.

why would anyone do NA instead of ND&M?

As I have said previously, I have no desire to persue a career in the design or management of networks, my interest is in the administration of the network and its nodes, and in its security. Same reason someone goes for MCSA instread of MCSE, in my mind, or SSCP instead of CISSP.

To illustrate this, I googled Network admin vs. network engineer, I found this: http://www.tek-tips.com/viewthread.cfm?qid=1070273&page=2 I like the first explination as far as job responsibilities. Also, here are some relevant (but at least 1 is unreferencedicon_sad.gif articles. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_administrator http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_Engineer http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/System_administrator

My interest is along the lines of Network/System/Security Admin.

That I've seen from other board posters (here and elsewhere), you're correct. The AS will wipe out the math requirements as well, even if you didn't meet their normal requirements. WGU is not the only university that does this. I will find out about this within the next few weeks myself when my evaluation is completed.

The AS as a general ed source doesn't have age limits. The major-specific courses have to be within the last five years, though.

I don't think they'll care about CIS vs. IS as much as they'll care when and which classes went into the major.
