Why would one want to add the network type point-to-point on a loopback interface in a real-world situation? Or, is it merely for labbing purposes?

I have never done it, but one situation I could think of is if you are NATing through a range of addresses assigned to a loopback and want the whole subnet advertised via OSPF rather than a /32. A lab is the only place I've actually used it though personally.An expert is a man who has made all the mistakes which can be made. -

Yeah I've only seen it done in a lab. If you want to advertise a block of addresses that aren't on any of your interfaces just make a static route to null0 and redistribute that into ospf.
