Is this capable of doing layer 3 switching and if not what switch is good for CCNP studies?

No. They wouldn't put a L3 switch module inside a SOHO router. But the router portion would be capable of routing :P

3560 or a 3550 if you can't get one of those. A 3750 will also work but they're generally more expensive and you don't gain anything useful for labs.
