telnet will not work on my command prompt

why is this? i can ping the device but i can't telnet it.

i thought maybe that telnet was not installed but can find a download

yes it doesn't recognise the command telnet

Try to CD to the \windows or \windows\system32 directory and run it from there.
Check the permissions on telnet.exe. It might be restricted to admins in Vista.

yeah i've tried it in that dir with admin permissions, still nothing

Go to Control Panel->Programs and then something like "Windows features" or "Advanced" ....You should find the option to install telnet or switch it on.

EDIT - Programs and Features > Turn Windows features on or off > Telnet Client

and it works, thanks it gave me a big long list of things to tick and untick

tftp client is one i ticked while i was in there, i'm a bit shocked all that wasn't ticked by default, never mind helped me lean something, cheers guys

Why do you need to have TFTP enabled? You should minimize the services that you have running to only necessary services. Telnet is disabled by default in Vista and Windows 7 due to the inherent security flaws of clear-text protocols.

Thats how it is done. Make sure you pick telnet client and not telnet server (unless you want to allow hackers to telnet into your system)
