Master list of B&M colleges offering online IT degrees

ZartanasaurusZartanasaurus Member Posts: 2,008 ■■■■■■■■■□
I have been compiling a list of online MBAs and I noticed a few schools that were offering non-CS IT degrees. So I decided to start looking at any school that offered an online MBA and checked their website to see what else they offered online. As I've said before, I'm a big proponent in finding a known school in your region and seeing what they offer for online degrees vs going to online-only schools with no name recognition. To each his own though.

And now, without further stalling for time...

Undergrad

Penn State (PA) (Tier I, #47 overall)

$472/ch out-of-state
$13,462 in-state

Mercy College (NY) (Tier IV)
BS-Computer Information Systems (120 ch)
BS-Information Assurance & Security (120 ch)
$8,245/term

New York sure is expensive...

$153.54
$173.99
$18,424 in-state
$20,878 out-of-state

The low out-of-state prices only come if you fill out an out-of-state tuition waiver, which it looks like everyone qualifies for.

Nova Southeastern (FL) (Tier IV)
BS-Computer Information Systems (120 ch?)
$540/ch

University of Maryland University College (MD) (unranked)

Graduate

Brandeis (MA) (Tier 1, #31 overall)
MS-Information Assurance (30 ch)
MS-Information Technology Management (30 ch)
MS-Project Management (30 ch)
$735/ch
$22,050

This looks to be the most prestigious B&M university offering an online degree program so far.

Georgia Tech (GA) (Tier 1, #35 overall)
MS-Information Security (32 ch)
$1,010/ch
$32,320

I felt like Chris Rock in I'm Gonna Git You Sucka when I saw the tuition.

Syracuse University (NY) (Tier I, #58 overall)
MS-Information Management (36 ch)
MS-Telecommunications & Network Management (36 ch)
$1,117/ch
$40,212

Your first year of study requires a one-week on-campus residence in July. Shouldn't be too hard of a requirement to meet with vacation time.

Virginia Tech (VA) (Tier I, #71 overall)
MS-Information Technology (30 ch?)
$488 in-state
$957.75 out-of-state
$14,640 in-state
$28,732.50 out-of-state

NC State (NC) (Tier I, #88 overall)
MS-Computer Networks (4 concentrations) (31 ch)
$240/ch in-state
$700/ch out-of-state
$7,471 in-state
$21,700

This looks like a rigorous program. If you don't have a CompSci, CompEng or EE undergrad degree, they require you to take up to Calc III in undergrad courses. Cheap if you live in NC though.

Auburn (AL) (Tier I, #88 overall)
Dual MS-Information Systems/MBA (54 ch)
$668/ch
$36,072

Florida State (FL) (Tier I, #102 overall)
MS-Management Info Systems
$486.54/ch in-state
$1,117.94/ch out-of-state
MBA-Management Info Systems
$486.54/ch in-state
$553.37/ch out-of-state

Kind of confused on the tuition. One one page, it says the OOS tuition is $1,110/ch. On another page, it says the IS and OOS tuition are the same for the online MIS program. Might want to double check.

Colorado State (CO) (Tier I, #128 overall)
MSBA-Computer Info Systems (30 ch)
$620/ch
$18,600

James Madison University (VA) (Tier I, #4 Universities-Master's (South))
MS-Information Security (33 ch)
$718/ch
$23,694
HT: peacepa

Rochester Institute of Technology (NY) (Tier I, #9 Universities-Master's (North))
MS-Networking & Systems Administration (48 qh)
$11,078/quarter
$33,234

They have a flat rate for full-time students taking up to 18 credits per quarter. Since this degree could theoretically be completed in three quarters, I used that as the price for the degree.

University of Dallas (TX) (Tier I, #13 Universities-Master's (West))
MS/MBA-Information Assurance (39 ch)
MS/MBA-Information Technology
MBA-Project Management
$624/ch
$24,336
HT:colemic

Very annoying website to navigate. I'm going to assume all the Master's degree programs are 39 ch. They also offer dual MBA/MS degrees so you could mix and match as well.

Marist (NY) (Tier I, #15 Universities-Master's (North))
MS-Information Systems (30 ch)
$695/ch
$20,850

Michigan @ Dearborn (MI) (Tier I, #27 Universities-Master's (Midwest))
MS-Computer Information Systems (30 ch)
MS-Information Systems & Technology (30ch)

I couldn't figure out their tuition. Could be presented a lot more clearly.

Illinois @ Springfield (IL) (Tier I, #27 Universities-Master's (Midwest))
MS-Management Information Systems (36 ch)
$294.75/ch
$10,611
HT:brianeaglesfan

Dakota State (SD) (Tier I, #35 Baccalaureate Colleges (Midwest))
MS-Information Systems (30 ch)
MS-Information Assurance & Computer Security (36 ch)

Norwich University (VT) (Tier I, #62 Universities-Master's (North))
MS-Information Assurance (36 ch)
$779
$28,044
HT:cablegod

I couldn't actually find a page specifically mentioning that this program was offered online, but Norwich does have online programs and it was mentioned by a poster in-thread.

Mississippi St (MS) (Tier III)
MBA-Project Management (33 ch)
$502.50/ch
$16,582.50

Oklahoma St (OK) (Tier III)
MS-Management Information Systems (33 ch)

$324.31 in-state
$1,117.01 out-of-state
$9,729 in-state
33,510 out-of-state
HT:dratnol

Holy out-of-state tuition costs, Batman. I don't think anyone from outside Florida will be using this one.

DePaul University (IL) (Tier III)
MS-Computer, Information & Network Security (52 ch)
MS-E-Commerce Technology (52 ch)
MS-Information Technology (52 ch)
MS-IT Project Management (52 ch)

East Carolina (NC) (Tier IV)
MS-Technology Systems (7 concentrations) (30 ch)

That has got to be one of the cheapest master's degrees you can get.

Mercy College (NY) (Tier IV)
MS-Information Assurance & Security (30 ch)
$765/ch
$22,950

The degree guide states that this program will prepare you for CISSP certification.

Tarleton State (TX) (Tier IV)

$10,949.76 out-of-state

Requires out-of-state tuition waiver.

Nova Southeastern (FL) (Tier IV)
MS-Computer Information Systems (36 ch)
MS-Information Security (36 ch)
MS-Information Technology (36 ch)
MS-Management Information Systems (36 ch)

$20,022 out-of-state
HT:dratnol

The MS-InfoSystems actually requires an on-campus residency every six weeks for two of the classes. BUT, you can take those required classes at another university and transfer them in if you can find them online. Not a bad option for someone who doesn't mind driving there every six weeks though.

Mountain State University (WV) (Tier IV, Universities-Master's (South))
BS-Information Technology (130 ch)

Bellevue (NE) (unranked)

Capitol College (MD) (Unranked)
MS-Information Assurance (36 ch)
MS-Information & Telecom Systems Mgmt (38 ch)
$554/ch

HT:colemic

Brandman University (CA) (unlisted)
MBA-Information Security Management
$550/ch (36 – 48 ch)
$19,800 - $26,400

It was unlisted, but it's part of Chapman University, which is ranked #9 in Universities-Master's (West).

I'm currently enrolled in the on-line MS - Management Information Systems program at the University of Illinois - Springfield. Current graduate e-tuition rate (in an on-line program and only taking on-line courses) is $294.75 a credit hour, so for 36 credit hours, total = $10,611. Information can be found here:

    Department of Management Information Systems
    Complete: MSMIS, MBA, EPIC certified

I was taking classes at ECU, in the Digital Communications and Information Security programs.

The classes are a little easier than you'd expect. But other than that it's a good program, at a reasonable price.

The instructors are very knowledgeable and are willing to help.

I am presently enrolled in the Digital Forensics (graduate) program at the University of Central Florida. They also offer a certificate in computer forensics that is online as well.

The University of Michigan Flint campus offers a MS in CIS and a CIS focused MBA. The business department has really good staff, the advisor/"leadership" on the CIS side sucks. That is the nicest thing I can say about them without making large donations to the swear jar.

Baker College also offers online MBA programs, one of which is technology focused.

All of these programs can be completed online in their entirety and are graduate level programs.

My experience was fine. Nothing to rant and rave about, but also nothing to really complain about. Both my wife and I graduated from there. She went the traditional route where I did the accelerated online program. I got my degree in Management Information Systems.

I've heard that financial aid can be brutal to deal with at times. They can be lazy and apparently uninterested in helping you. I didn't have these problems, but my tuition was pretty straight forward and I was able to handle it myself with minimal input from them.

As for the accelerated online program, there were no tests. You had to respond to a few questions in a discussion forum that related to the weeks readings and create dialog with other student's posts.

My degree was definately one where you get out of it what you put in. I found it pretty easy to half @$$ my way to a 3.9 GPA. I wouldn't read every required reading, and would just skim others. If you can carry a reasonable conversation, you can probably pass with very little effort. I will say though that it took me 9 years to finally finish my degree after high school. I had been in the working world for a while and some of the things being taught, I already had experience with. By this point, the degree was nothing more than checking off a requirement on the resume to make sure I can remain competative in the job market. I didn't necessairly seek it for its educational value.

I don't know about OH, but in Michigan they have a excellent reputation. I have worked with Baker students, and for the most part they know their stuff.

    Yeah, Michigan too.

The reason I am hesitant is, every time you see advertising for the online only universities like UoP or Capella, Baker is listed with them. So I associate them with that crowd.

Baker is a normal brick and mortar college and they offer online degrees too. Everyone I know that has been to Baker has been really happy with the experience and I would say know their subject. It is a private college that started out with business programs just about a hundred years ago. They are not the braindump of the university/college world.

Just one little update to you post on U of M Flint, only the two required business classes require a residency. The other classes can be completed in their entirety online.

The graduate certificate at UCF charges in state rates even if you are out of state. The masters program is expensive if you are out of state, no doubt about that.

Wow Zartanasaurus, that's a tremendous amount of research and effort you've put in to making a summarized posting. Very useful; this definitely gets my vote for a sticky.

I'll add my contribution to this thread. If you go to the Higher Learning Commissions's website, The Higher Learning Commission - Home , you can search through all universities and colleges that are accredited through this institution. You can view details about each school and it will clearly state what distance learning programs that school offers. For example, Capella is accredited through them and it lists all of their distance learning programs offered.

Now take another more traditional B&M school, Purdue University for instance, and you'll see they only offer 7 programs through distance learning.

You might want to add Norwich University.

Grad Programs: Norwich University School of Graduate and Continuing Studies online degree programs (MS:ISA & another MS: Business Continuity)

Undergrad Programs: Undergraduate programs: Norwich University (CS, CSIA, and a few others).

A friend just graduated from the MS:ISA program. It was pretty rigorous from my understanding.

Bwahaha, people these days and their sensitive ego. I just gave you a positive to counteract the, um, nevermind, "person" whom neged you. Seems it took you up a level too. Funny thing, I'm an online student, and I did not take offense to this post at all. I thought it was helpful.

Indeed they do, both Master of Arts AND Masters of Science in IT. This one looks really good for what I am looking for:

MS - Computer Information and Network Security - DePaul

Unfortunately, this is not what I am looking for:

Yes, they are expensive. For that price, you can go to RIT which is in the Tier 1 category. Probably a little bit more but I think the name pay for itself.

Also wanted to mention the Academic Common Market.

Cliffs Notes version: If you live in any of these states (pretty much ACC/Big-12 South/SEC country) and a particular program you want to study for isn't offered in your state, you can get a waiver to go to another university and only pay the in-state tuition rate.

Search for programs you qualify for by picking your home state here. You can specify online programs as a search criteria.
