Got the A+

I just completed my A+ cert yesterday! I got an 819 on the 701 and an 860 on the 702.

I used Testout and Selftest Software to prepare and made heavy use of Wikipedia for reading through the objectives posted on the CompTIA website.

    Congrats on the good scores!
I used Testout for the Net+ and Sec+ and it was an excellent resource.
    What's next for you?
No longer work in IT. Play around with stuff sometimes still and fix stuff for friends and relatives.

Congrats! Great scores man. I'm having to use TestOut as required study material for my MS classes so hopefully I can pull off the same type scores on MCITP haha :).

Congrats! How did you find it? I'm taking both exams on Wednesday. Will finish reading the all-in-one book today and spend Monday and Tuesday doing practice tests. Have spent about a month preparing.

hi rogue2shadow..you really got alot of certifications line up there..I am so determined to do that as well..i just don't know where to start.

I see that you started with A+ certification..good job! How long did you approximately study for it? do you have a job already and working in the IT Field?

Do you think its wise that I go for A+, network+ and security+...I was looking into MCDST or is that a waste of time?

Thank you for your kind remarks :).

For my A+ I used two Jean Andrews books (A+ Guide to Hardware and Software), Cert Blaster for practice tests from Cengage (which came from the book), the Sybex A+ 2009 book, hardware and software courses at my local community college, and the old CBT nuggets series on it. I also had two years of experience doing PC troubleshooting and repair as a retail job. Overall I'd say it was a couple months. I was studying for some of the other exams during the same time period.

I think it was overkill for this exam but I wanted to fully understand the content to build a solid foundation for myself.

In terms of MCDST vs A+, I've seen the A+ required in more than 75% of postings I've seen for technician jobs. It wouldn't be a waste of time to take it but it depends on the path you're taking and what job you want in the end.

The MCDST is a good way to get a couple of certs (MCP, MCDST) and fulfill the elective requirement for the MCSA. I did it that way, and if you do the Vista upgrade exam you fill the requirements for the OS part and get another two certs. With that route I got five certs for five exams, MCP, MCDST, MCITP, MCTS and MCSA by taking 70-271 (MCP), 70-272 (MCDST), 70-621 (MCITP, MCTS), 70-290 & 70-291 (MCSA)

    I agree! :)

    @dancreaney
I'm going to be taking the MCITP:SA track early 2011, when I finish all the exams would I get 5 designations or 3?
For example would it be: MCP, MCTS, MCITP:SA, MCTS: Active Directory, MCTS: Network Infrastructure or MCP, MCTS, MCITP:SA?

I believe that's how the new paths work, as they are moving away from the general engineer certs (MCSA, MCSE) to more granular specializations, i.e Technology Specialist on a given technology. Easiest way to find out is to log into the MCP site and look at your certification planner.

I will probably pursue the 70-294 next and then complete my MCSE with the 293 and 298. After that I would like to upgrade to an MCITP on Server 2008. Who knows what I'll do after that. Database? CCNA? Probably let my current employment situation decide that for me.

I found them to be a little challenging but overall not too hard. I scored a bit better than I expected.

Congrats on the cert. Hopefully CompTIA sends you your cert faster than what they took to send me mine.
