New CCNA - Lab Question, 2801's...

ptlinvaptlinva Member Posts: 125
I have (2) 2801 (plus other routers 2500/2600/3620's), 2x2950, and 1x3550 for my CCNA Lab.

I'm still learning all of the CCNA-Voice lingo, so please bear with me.

Both of my 2801's, when doing a 'show hardware', state...

Cisco 2801 (revision 7.0) with 241664K/20480K bytes of memory.
Processor board ID FTX1246Z02D
2 FastEthernet interfaces
1 Serial interface
1 Virtual Private Network (VPN) Module
1 DSP, 8 Voice resources
DRAM configuration is 64 bits wide with parity disabled.
191K bytes of NVRAM.
62720K bytes of ATA CompactFlash (Read/Write)
Configuration register is 0x2102

Also on both..
System image file is "flash:c2801-adventerprisek9-mz.124-24.T.bin"

There are NO cards in the VIC slot. Only serial and T1 cards that I've been using in the other slots.

I guess I'm looking at the line "1 DSP, 8 Voice resources".

1) Are just a couple of phones and VIC cards all I need to get started?

2) Having a DSP in your router is different than having a CUE in your router, correct? I guess I don't quite understand what the CUE or CUE module is yet.

Thank you for your time and assistance. I'm hoping that I'll be able to contribute to this forum soon enough...

Your friend in VA,
Paul L.

First off, I'm extremely jealous of your 2801s. Okay... now on to business...

Yep... a two or three phones, VIC-2FXS and a VIC-2FXO and you'll be all set. The DSP resources that you have should be enough since you have a very small lab. Just to be sure, you can always check Cisco's Site and do a search for DSP calculator.

Yes, having DSP resources will allow the router to offload the telephone processing to the DSPs. They act similar to a GPU on a video card. So your "heavy" call resources will utilize your DSP resources.

The CUE is the Cisco Unity Express. This is your Voicemail resource. The CUE can be in two different models: The AIM-CUE & the NM-CUE. HTH.

    Hi Peanut!

Thank you for the kind words... :)

BTW, your reply was on target! It helped me grasp a few things... DSP<->GPU... I got it...Thanks!

I looked into CME... I think I got it... CUE... <sticker shock on my face> Wow, that's gotta wait until I get a job...

    Q. Can you run CUE/voicemail on a PC/Server as compared to buying the CUE hardware for the router?

Thanks again for your quick reply.

    Your friend,
    Paul

Absolutely.... I had my voice lab setup with CME routers and I also had a Trixbox setup as a voicemail server. So after the recommended "18 seconds" or "3 rings", the phone call would forward to my trixbox which has a builitin voicemail and its opensource and FREE.

The CUE... most people would agree with me... unless you have a business need for it... the purchasing of an AIM-CUE or NM-CUE for a lab is unnecessary. HTH
