Basically, how software is licensed and managed.
For example, your company probably has a Volume License agreement from Microsoft. You probably have a VLM agreement for X amount of computers that can have Windows XP and Office 2007 for 2 years. When it's time to renew your two years, you now pay about the same or a little more for Windows 7 and Office 2010. Somewhere in your agreement, you probably have it where you will pay for that, BUT you want to retain your Windows XP and Office 2007 licenses so that you can either take your time upgrading X amount, or perhaps not until Microsoft tells you they will no longer support Windows XP and Office 2007. You may have a spreadsheet/Access db (maybe even a tiny SQL database) that tells you what PCs have what software/OS.
That, in a nutshell is Software Lifecycle Management.
