Magic Tricks For Windows

This was new to me;

MAGIC TRICK #1

An Indian found that nobody can create a FOLDER called CON
This is something funny and inexplicable.
At Microsoft the whole Team couldn't answer why this happened!
(That is probably untrue)

TRY IT NOW, IT WILL NOT CREATE A FOLDER CALLED CON

MAGIC TRICK #2

Do the following:
1.) Open an empty notepad file
2.) Type "Bush hid the facts" (without the quotes)
3.) Save it as whatever you want.
4.) Close it, and re-open it.

Notice what happens? No one can explain! (Again probably untrue, more like Why?)

MAGIC TRICK #3

It was discovered by a Brazilian.

Open Microsoft Word and type
=rand (200, 99)
And then press ENTER
And see the magic...!

Trick 1 and 2 aint no magic. This character string "CON" is a reserved name. Others are:

AUX
PRN
NUL
LPT1
COM1
Potential drive letter - A: to Z:

I can't explain the notepad one... that's hilarious.

Maybe it's a joke? What year was XP released?

#1 has been responded to. #2 didn't work for me. #3 Computer Urban myth about =rand(200,99) .old() updated for Word 2007

more likely a weird bug. bill fed the goats will do the same thing. so will some other phases that contain the same number of words and letters.

#2 is because Notepad upon loading is trying to detect if the file is UTF or ASCII and some character sequences confuse it and it thinks the file is UTF. Its not magic and its not a conspiracy.

Apparently microsoft has changed their minds, because it doesn't seem to work with windows 7.

I'm on word 2007, and I couldn't get either of the examples in that page to work.

WinXP and Word 2007. Worked all the tricks

At work now with XP and Word 2003, and it worked.

I was also able to get bush hid the facts to work. Except it just displayed as a bunch of empty boxes.

Using Office 2010 on Windows 7, it still works.
But I get some useful tips instead of the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog

Using Word 2003 on Windows 7 64-bit worked with the Word one. The Bush hid the facts one didn't work, but that might have something to do with how file is read in a 64 bit version of Windows compared to a 32 bit version. Of course, the first one was explained away, though that's still pretty funny none the less.

On 7 when I tried this I got an error message. On XP it just cancels the rename with no notification.
