CIW Certs

apr911apr911 Member Posts: 380 ■■■■□□□□□□
Im surprised, with all of the WGU students we have on this forum board, we dont have a CIW Certification Forum?

From what I can tell, WGU likes them a lot so there must be a bunch of us taking them for that purpose right?

The BS:IT Security course load has 4...

CIW Foundations
CIW Javascript
CIW Site Designer
CIW Database Specialist

The IT, IT Software & IT Database courses seem to have the same 4 classes so I would assume the same exams so thats 4 of the 6 BS:IT programs available taking those 4 exams.

IT Network Design and Management & IT Network Admin are the only 2 that dont have all 4 exams and as far as I can tell, they have

CIW Foundations
CIW Javascript

Just a thought...

I don't think a CIW forum is necessary for a couple of reasons. First, I think most people here don't run into much trouble with the CIW exams. The exams aren't tricky at all, so it's rare that someone would post a question about any particular exam. Also, CIW certs aren't in demand (I mean, AT ALL) in the job market, and as a result don't have the buzz as the other, more popular, certs (CompTIA, Microsoft, Cisco, etc).

Then again, a separate forum would probably see more action then, say, the Java or Storage forums.

The CIW Foundations exam is basically a review of all the IT stuff I've done in the last 19 years. Before EW chimes along with his favorite saying on this subject, it really is "a mile long and an inch deep."

The only thing I needed serious study with was HTML/XHTML/XML. But really, that's just syntax and where stuff goes. Once you get that, it's not really a problem. I would imagine the other CIW exams are the same to prep for.

I will say this for Foundations though...it's not a terribly useless if you're going into IT Management. It would show that you are familiar with all facets of IT and a good IT manager should be. I am not saying that it's a cert that will teach or prepare you for IT Management. But being familiar with all things IT is something a good IT manager should be doing anyway. :)

There is really no need for having a CIW forum board. CIW is a relatively obscure certification body and is only familiar to those that are involved in web design. WGU's main reason for using them appears to be, that they are vendor neutral and approach the topics chosen with out bias towards a certain vendor hardware.

I have actually worked with State Educational Bodies who require CIW certifications. That being said that is all that I have seen that require them. There are a few organizational bodies that do require them but other than that they really have not grown since the Web Bubble Burst.

Now that CIW:Security Professional is recognized by the CISSP for removing 1 year of educational requirements maybe we will see more growth. When looking at jobs online I noticed that a number of jobs requiring programming education required either Microsoft Development certifications, Sun Certified Programmer certifications or CIW certifications. Each one is far different than the other but some HR departments lump them together just be aware.

I find it funny that I need CIW for the first IT class in WGU, and my A+ got me out of the two above it. Though I still have to go get my CIW associates... interesting.

It honestly seems like a cakewalk. I think that if they advance in the future there may just be a need for a section here for it. As of right now, it is just not needed and popular enough.

If you are looking for a CIW forum there is one at MCMCSE.COM and that site actually has some good info on those CIW certs.
A lot of people here who have the CIW certs don't list them on our signatures or our resumes, at least I don't.

I am not wasting the bytes or putting in the level of typing on CIW certs...lmao. (But I will do it on management-type resumes... :) ).

I don't the CIW certs on my resume either. But I will list them on this board just in case someone wants to PM me a question about them (also very rare).

I have listed the JavaScript Specialist on a couple of resumes that I customized for the position because it asked for JavaScript in the job requirements. I just added that cert to my regular resume for that position. I don't have it on my general resumes that get searched as I'd prefer to not have to consistently be contacted for jobs with a lot of programming.

I just started WGU at the beginning of this month, Ive completed 9 CUs already and I am sitting the Foundations exam Tuesday morning to wrap up the "REQUIRED" portion of my term.

Ive been working on the foundations review material for the past few days and Ive struggled a little bit with it because of all the legacy technology (when was the last time you used a token ring network? or CAT 3 cabling? Anyone?)

I havent actually looked at the Javascript, Site Designer or Database Specialist material yet. I have the CBT course for Javascript but not database or site designer.

I dont know what to expect with Site Designer and Databases and with the trouble Ive run into with legacy stuff in foundations, I got to thinking about the lack of a forum.

Honestly I know the CIW exams are a bit of a joke... I dont plan on listing them on my resume or even mentioning them at any point in the future. I just was just thinking it would be helpful to know what I was getting into based off past experiences.

The Javascript and site designer courses will both be dealing with a lot of legacy stuff. I took the JavaScript and had started to take web design before WGU had changed the policy so I didn't have to take it. The web design class deals with a lot of old stuff. When you get aaround to those classes you'll be enrolled in the web design community at WGU which will be helpful.
As I said earlier you can find a lot of good info on the MCMCSE.com site for the CIW certs.

    Hi
Am new to this form and taking HTML,CSS courses from Pluralsight. I wanted to take CIW web foundation course 1DO-610 but could not find any books relevant to that in Amazon. Rather there was 510. Since am in the beginner level, could you please guide me whether foundation course is better or to take separate three exams,Internet busi.assoc,Site Busi.Ass,network technol?

    Your help is appreciated.

The 510 book should work fine. I used the 410 book, when self-studying for the 510. This is not a hard exam, so don't sweat it.

I agree.. A separate area discussing CIW exams would be nice especially since so many WGU students are here.
