Deciding on a GW

Hey all,

Just had a quick question. When designing a new network, you basically can decide who gets what IP. I was wondering if there is any "best pratices" or any unwritten rule for picking the IP address for a subnet's default gateway.

It is pretty standard to see gateways being the first usable host address in the subnet range.
IE, 192.168.0.0/24 GW 192.168.0.1
I have seen them being the last address as well, but most common is the first from my experiance.

There are no unwritten rules for assigning IP's to default gateways. In my experience a lot would depend on the overall design of the network as well as personal preference. It's typically the norm to assign the first address i.e: x.0.1/x.1.1 as previously mentioned. But I've seen a wide variety of addresses used.

Figured as much. I've normally seen x.x.x.1 but just wanted to see what everyone thought.

Hi,

We tend to use the following (if HSRP or equivalent is not being used then assume DG is HSRP address):

x.x.x.1 = HSRP
x.x.x.2 = Primary Router
x.x.x.3 = Secondary Router

I have also seen:

x.254 = HSRP
x.252 = Primary
x.253 = Secondary.
