Cert Goal 2011

I am sure there is a thread around here already. But here are my thoughts for certs for the coming year. Somewhere in there I want to build a Linux from scratch.

Any input? Think it's too much?

11/10 - 70-298 (Earns MCSE: Security)
12/10 - Securing Networks with ASA Foundation
01/11 - Securing Networks with ASA Advanced (earns ASA Specialist Cert)
03/11 - Route
05/11 - Switch
08/11 - Tshoot (Earns CCNP Routing and Switching)
10/11 - CCDA

As for me, my certification plans keep evolving based on certain whims (for example, my CCSP plans are going to be adapted to the new CCNP: Security track since the official study material will be available in Q1 of 2011). I'm going to try and round up the CCNP (R&S) and CCDA. The other big ones are the GCIA, GCFW, or GAWN (or all three if I'm willing to become financially broke). The CWNA and CWSP also look attractive.

So that's four Cisco, two CWNP, and at least one or two GIAC exams for next year. I'll optionally also consider the four CCNP: Security exams. Lots of work ahead...

The only exams that are definitely on the agenda are:

70-290
70-291
70-680

Other possibilities include the ITIL v3 Foundations exam and the PMI CAPM exam. Also may start an MBA program if the money is right. We'll see.

Gonna do Security+ by the end of this year. I might get 70-298 in this year as well, or let that slide until early next year.

70-293 & 70-294 to wrap up MCSE. I believe I'll get +S specialization if I submit my CompTIA transcript to MS as well.

Beyond that, I'm not sure. I can't decide if I want to go for my CCNA or MCITP:EA, or maybe something with database administration. I might even look into getting MCT status. I'll cross that bridge when I get to it!

I will finish MCSA 2003, MCITP windows 7 and possibly CCNP security next year.

1. MCSA (270, 290, 291 and still deciding whether to go for 680 or an Exchange cert.)
2. Solaris administrator. The more I look at Solaris, the more I like to get indepth with its features.
No. 2 takes presedence over No. 1.

Just not in awe with Windoze but people say it looks good on resume...

Aside from pursuing my BS in InfoSec (a minimum of a class every 8 weeks) I will be looking at:

* CCNA - Security
* CISSP

Those are the only two I have decided to do absolutely. I'm also going to be:

* Mastering Spanish (purchasing Rosetta Stone)
* Picking up any certs mapped to classes; ex: if a class maps to Project+, I will take the Project+ test.

Optional Add-Ins:

* Guitar+ (Basic guitar theory; needed to round out my skills)

At one point there was a thread around here that I started but I am not sure where it went. In that thread I said I wanted to do some MS and as of now, that was put on hold due to some changes at work. Also the sonicwall certs are out as well so...

LPIC-1: DEC
WCNA: Late JAN or early FEB 2011
SSCP: MAR 2011

After that it depends. I want to do CWNA, C|EH and the Elearnsecurity course BUT the Elearnsecurity course counts for CPEs for ISC2. Now I can't apply those points until I am a full SSCP (or associate). People have said that getting the score back takes quite a bit of time, in addition to the time I will spend finding a sponsor. Another thing is whether or not I do the "Pro" or the "Student" (whenever it comes out). The "Pro" gives you CPEs but the "Student" may not. If I do the "Student" I will go for it very almost right in April and work on that through June, if not then it will have to be sometime after everything is squared away with SSCP so:

CWNA: 2nd Quarter 2010
C|EH: 2nd Quarter 2010
Elearnsecurity: 2nd quarter 2010

Then there is GSEC. At $900 it is the most expensive test I have on my list for 2011. I will be wrapping up my A.A.S in August of 2011 and I'd like to graduate with this on my resume if time and money permit. So:

GSEC: August 2010

That's as far out as I want to look. I'd like to find a new job but I won't be making a huge push for that until after I graduate. There is also a possibility that I try to do LPIC-2 and CWSP but that might be tacking on a bit much. Who knows though.. I don't want to be spread to thin and I want to make sure I understand the material of the test completely. Even if I only get half of this stuff done, I will be very happy if I acquire a decent amount of knowledge. I also will shop around for BS programs.

- Complete MCITP: EA
- GCWN (I've put in for training so hopefully it will get approved).
- ??

My 2010 was pretty crazy, knocked out 2 of the MCITP: EA tests, knocked out 2 GIAC certs and had a baby (well not me, but my wife). In the fall I may go for my CISSP, but I need to make sure I meet all the requirements for it. I may also decide once the EA is complete is to just take the one test to also add the MCITP: SA to the list.

For the rest of 2010, I'm just relaxing and slowing going through LPIC-1 material (for the third time maybe?). My major issue now is remembering critical file names and those obscure switches. In my case, and this may not be the case for everyone, anytime I'm asked if I know anything about Linux they kind of just go "okay" whether I answer yes or no so for now I'll study the material but I'll hold on certifying unless I jump into a Linux/Unix admin roll.

In 2011, I want to study Windows Server architecture, read the WCNA book, re-look at my CCNA Security studies and possibly take the exam (this is more for a renewal/knowledge now than a resumé booster) in March or push to 2012, start my masters program in Cybersecurity in June, and maybe become C|EH by August.

Overall, 2011 will be the year of gaining security work experience.

Personally if I were you, I'd move TSHOOT to a week after the switch. The closer you do it after ROUTE and SWITCH the better, as its about applying the knowledge you learnt from them, so the more you still have it the better.

Next year is all about the CCIE, though work is making noise about room in the training budget to send me through the RHCE class and then exam. Apparently they like having a network engy who's linux knowledgeable

I've hit all of the goals I set for myself for 2010, though work popped the GSEC on me, so I'm planning to knock that out before the end of the year

I'm toying with the idea of JNCIA at some point next year as well, depends on how the CCIE studies go

Goals for 2011.. Let's see.

Server+ - I figure with my Server/Blade/SAN experience, this should be easy, plus CompTIA tests are usually pretty easy compared to the rest.

Project+ - I've been thinking of getting into some type of mgmt experience especially since I might learn a few things to help me manage the projects I juggle on a daily basis.

BCSA (BlackBerry Certified System Administrator) - I'm a big BlackBerry guy, been working a BES for a few years now. This should be a real easy one for me.

ITIL - Not sure about this, as I mentioned earlier, I've thinking about something that will make me a better project manager.

CWNA - I'll see how my CWTS test goes, but I've worked with Wi-Fi networks for years, so I'm thinking this one won't be too bad.

Virtualization - I'd like to get a cert concerning virtualizing but I need to see where my environment goes, I've been managing a VMWare cluster but now my Director is talking about dropping for Hyper-V due to the cost of VMWare. So I need to see where this goes.

Cisco - I forget all to easy that my main role as Network Analyst is well the network (I manage so much other crap), I want at least one Cisco Cert next year, whether it be my CCDA or a CCSP test.

That's just me being optimistic, what i actually end up getting next year will be another story, but we shall see. 2010 has been good to me, of course I've spent a lot of time studying. I just hate being so divided in terms of knowledge I kind of envy those people that specialize in one particular technology. (On the other hand, I only get certs that pertain to my job role)

I think I put in the other thread my goals, but it can't hurt to throw it in again

CCIP - I need the knowledge for the technologies in this (or at least, I need it for where I want to be in life), and I'm already halfway through studying for QoS so I can see this one being knocked out in the first third of next year.

CCIE: R&S - My goal is to have the written at least attempted by the end of 2011, if not having already passed it. I put it off initially simply as I didn't feel like my knowledge matched up, and also I want to be able to go straight into practicing for the lab which requires the money for materials, which I simply haven't had this year.

Those two are definites, I'm also trying to work out in my mind whether to throw in the following

JNCIS-ENT/SP - I like Juniper a lot, so getting something else of theres would please me, plus I'm liking taking a break in exam style between each one I do. I consistently score about 70% on the practice exams on the Juniper site already and I've not looked at the study material for the exams, so it may be one I can get out the way a lot quicker than I'd expect

CCNA + CCNP Security - I'm not sure on this one. I do feel like my lack of firewall/security knowledge is hampering my job chances at times, but at the same time, I want to work in a service provider environment eventually, to which I would say getting onto the CCIE sooner rather than later is going to give more advantage for. Still, I may have a try with it and see what happens, this may be one I run alongside the CCIE to give myself breaks.

First off I have to stop waffling. I swear I've started 4 different studies and abandoned them for a different one.

With that said though, I'm probably going to try something like

CCNA:Security (if I don't finish before 2011; $ is only thing stopping me now)
one or two of MCITP (SA/EA), MCSA, MCSE
Work on CCNP:Security or CCNP
* some other security cert to be determined.
