can someone please explain to me the difference between the "ping" and "extended ping" I just don’t get it....

Using the Extended ping and Extended traceroute Commands - Cisco Systems -

Type ping <ip address> into the command-line of a Cisco router and hit enter, (where <ip address> is any reachable address from your router.)
Then try typing just ping and hitting enter, to see what happens.
The first is regular ol' PING, the second is Extended PING. Along with the information Netwurk posted, you should have no trouble figuring out how Extended PING differs from regular PING, and how to use Extended PING to do a little more in-depth messing around.
