considering dropping my current school for WGU

I have about 9 milion threads to read I guess..... those WGU threads are soooooooo long...

I had already decided once I finished up my Associates in June I would head to WGU for the Bachelor's...

but this is the first week of my school, Sullivan University... and I looked at how much it's going to cost me... i can still drop out this week without being charged for this quarter... it's just so insanely expensive... i love the school, but I'm just not sure I can justify it for how expensive it is

I'm just starting the application process with WGU now. Waiting on transcripts from my previous school to see what I can transfer in. Hopefully a decent portion of the gen-ed stuff. Cost is a deciding factor for me here as well as lack of a classroom setting. Classrooms and I do not get along very well. Hopefully i'll get a solid mentor that will allow me to tailor my program how I want it to be. Good luck with whatever you do though.

Mike, if you ever get time to just mess around or what not, I do encourage you to make an attempt to read those entire threads (just the Student Experiences and Question/Answer WGU that are Stickies). A good number of folks will just tell you to just read the latest stuff, but there is stuff between both of them that aren't discussed currently that WILL be beneficial to you. When I took that approach I found a lot of questions I had answered.

Seriously, it's not a bad deal to read them both. It won't take that long to do either...(I was quite surprised...lol)

I can only talk about my mentor...he plays ball and knows what's up. We have mutual trust and respect of each other and that's really all I can ask for. If you find that you can't stand your given mentor, definitely ask/demand for a new one and they will give you one with no problems. I have no reason to do that with mine.

Student Services (the two times I've used them) were also top notch...I have gotten follow-up calls for the silliest of things (things that weren't a big deal, but just wanted an answer at the time I asked for...it wasn't life or death if I didn't get it right away). They seem to really push customer service...I really appreciate that.

I'm 95% there at this point... I almost dropped out today, but I figure I should take a day to sleep on it...

I really like the school, it just doesn't make financial sense to stay there instead of WGU.... maybe I will go back there for a Master's if I do drop out

Get hold of a Firefox plug-in called Autopager. It took me about 45 minutes to read/skim all the relevant WGU posts just by pressing space bar.

I wish I had done this. Unless it's a prestigious school I'd save as much money as possible and put it towards a good Masters program.

It looks like the BS in IT program costs $33k, which is a ton. WGU is only $2900 per 6 month term. It's also a non-profit unlike Sullivan.

well, that and you can go at your own pace, and my pace is fast... Sullivan charges for every class, so if I wanna be more than a full time student, it costs a lot more... so they try to keep you at 12 hours per quarter...

once I saw someone post on here they graduated in one semester my interest was piqued...

my A.S. at my pace at Sullivan would have cost almost 30 g's..

I'm not sure if "prestigious" is the word I would use, but it's local and it's well known and respected, I have no plans on moving from this city, so it's good to have a known place on my resume.. and my previous Associates is from Phoenix, I wanted to have a brick and mortar on there in case someone didn't respect the online one....

but I think I may go to WGU for the B.S., and then back to high dollar Sullivan for the Master's

I've always felt getting an associates from a COMMUNITY COLLEGE first and then moving onto another school would be the wisest way to go. Just make sure the program transfers into a legit program. That is the key. You can save yourself 10,000's+ dollars in doing so.

I am completely debt free from my University of course I am 35 and graduated in 2001, but going the community college route saved me over 17,000 dollars.

well, I wish I had gone to a community college almost 14 years ago when I originally graduated.... but spilled milk...

currently my school is overpriced, but I'm really close to finishing, it seems odd to just bail on it right now..

I have 76 credits complete, I need 116 to complete it...

currently enrolled in 16 hours... leaving me with 24 credits to go after this quarter if I stay at Sullivan

Sounds like all you would need is one more semester, plus a summer to be done.

If WGU will accept most of the credits you have thus far...then, based on what you said, you could actually earn your BS in one 6-month term. I would contact WGU's admissions ASAP and at least entertain what it would be for your situation to transfer to WGU. It can't hurt...

Don't forget to ask one of us for a referral.

well, I am still conflicted... my wifey doesn't understand online schools or IT, and she is more than nervous about the concept of me bailing on Sullivan after all this time and money..

my friend who is in management at first was against WGU, but I told him to do some research, and now he's fully on board with it, encouraging me to sign up

so I sent Sullivan an e-mail, seeing if they would work with me on the financial aspect of it.... if they play ball, I will ride it out I guess... and then hit up WGU for my Bachelor's.... if Sullivan isn't willing to work with me, I will be signing up for WGU in a heartbeat

Sullivan's a 2nd Associates for me, first one was from University of Phoenix in Business

I went to Sullivan for their certification classes, but if you added like 3 more classes you could get an Associate's, so I signed up for the Associate program in IT since it was so similar.

I was planning on chugging on through to get a Bachelor's at Sullivan, but then I joined TE and found out about WGU, so I at this point I assume my Bachelor's will be with WGU...

the question at this point is do I finish out Associate #2 at Sullivan, or just leave now and head on for the Bachelor's from WGU

SInce you already have an Associates...and I personally find two AS degrees to be almost useless (seriously, I don't see anything practical that can be garnered from having two AS degrees), I would go the BS route with WGU and save some money! At most, you'll have earned a BS in one year. (maybe 6 months)

Don't get me wrong, one AS is fine and great. But to spend that amount of time getting two when you could have earned a BS that can then be parlayed into a Masters at some point.....I dunno, man....maybe you are better off saving some loot and going into WGU.

Well, I dropped Sullivan today.... but I still have to pay them off before they release my transcripts... so I'm not sure how soon I can start WGU... got $1800 to pay off

That is what my A.A. in General Studies at University of Phoenix cost. My Bachelors and Masters degree's combined will be cheaper then my Associates.

Don't forget to get a referral to waive the enrollment fee.

Michael just get your BS off of the University of Phoenix if you can. I don't know your situation, but if you have a business Admin A.S. I would just grab a Business Admin degree.

That's just me personally. Management would much rather hire a business major than a IT major when it comes to management.

Don't believe me look at most directors or higher and look at their degrees. All Accounting, Finance, Actuarial Sciences, Economics etc. I would just finish out your business degree. It will make you more money in the long run. Business drives IT not the other way around.

and I hate business.. I just took a Business degree because it was quicker than IT, and I was ready to get out of Phoenix...

I will probably go to WGU to finish out a Bacherlor's in IT, then head to a B&M to get a Master's... maybe even Sullivan, i really like it there... and in the same thought process as N2IT, I thought about getting a MBA instead of a MS in IT... Sullivan offers both... and MBA just sounds important

Personally, if I go the MBA route, it has to specifically state a specialization in IT Management or something along those lines....otherwise it will be an MS in IT Management. I want to shoot for an MBA though.

Yeah, UoP is terribly expensive for what they offer...those shareholders must be making serious bank...lol.
