SP and RP versions?

I am going to be upgrading the IOS on our 6513 during an outage we have scheduled soon, but I'm at a loss for finding the SP version.

In my experience with upgrading IOS, and I have done it alot, I have not found a time where I needed to include the RP and SP in the upgrade process. Then again, I have dealt mostly with new equipment out of the box, so I'm not sure if SP and RP need to be updated that frequently like IOS does from time to time.

I can find the RP ROMMON version in show version (up to date), but I can't find SP. Any idea how I can find it?

Also, is it even needed? I brought up the need to upgrade the IOS, and he brought up RP and SP. When I told him I hadn't done SP upgrades in the past, he acted like I was some kind of moron.

Are you still running CatOS on it at all? Most of the stuff I work on involves RSPs (7600s) so it's all integrated but i'm thinking you want your RP and SP to be close to each other if not identical. This is an older platform so if you aren't updating the switching side, then you're probably going to want to.

This looks promising...

On the Catalyst 6500 that runs Cisco IOS®, the SP boots first. It then turns control over to the RP. After the RP gains control, initiate the break sequence. The RP has gained control of the console port when you see this message. (Do not initiate the break sequence until you see this message):

Thanks for the information. We are not running CatOS, and we have a 720 SUP module. This caught my eye:

Supervisor Engine 720

In Supervisor Engine 720, after the Cisco IOS Software Release 12.2 SX there are no seperate image files such as a bootloader image and the main IOS image. The Supervisor Engine and the MSFC both run a single bundled Cisco IOS image.
Supervisor Engine 720 Common Features:
64-MB bootflash device or CompactFlash adapter with 512 MB CompactFlash card (WS-CF-UPG=):
64-MB bootflash device (sup-bootflash:) supported in all releases

Since we will be upgrading to [FONT=&quot]s72033-adventerprisek9_wan-mz.122-33.SXI5.bin , I assume that I will only have to be updating the IOS and it will do the SP and RP bit as well?

That is how I seem to grasp it, at this point. Correct me if I am wrong please. This is how I thought it had worked previously, until my co-worker seemed to imply otherwise.

Yes that should take care of it for you unless there is something Im missing as well and I've updated quite a few sup720s myself.

I think you should turn auto updates on and just let the switch reboot itself when it is done.
