CCNA 640-802 or ICND1 & ICND2?

Hey guys,

I have been CCNA certified twice before (once in 2000 and once in 2007), however let it lapse both times because the job I was with never had the demand for it.

Now I'm kicking myself hard - my current job wants me to get my CCNA cert and I'm starting with reading the ICND 1 Cisco press book, currently on Chapter 7. Everything I have read so far is second nature to me. I'm looking at going in and taking the 640-802 instead of splitting them up into 2 tests. My question is, is there anything on the ICND1 that's not covered in the ICND 2? Should I just start reading ICND 2 and be able to pass the test combined with some lab sims? I'm not sure what was added from the test in 2007, all I know is that they have split the books up into 2 books, and 2 exams as a choice. Thanks!

To the best of my knowledge ICND1 and ICND2 covers all the same topics as CCNA. If I was you I would just go the one test path.

Great, thanks. I guess my only question is, it seems icnd 1 is more of an introduction, and icnd 2 goes more in depth. Would it be ok to just skip the rest of the icnd 1 and start reading 2?

According to Cisco, you just need to pass the ICND2.

Pass the current ICND2 exam, or
Pass the current CCNA exam, or
Pass any current CCNA Concentration exam (wireless, or security, or voice, or SP Ops), or
Pass any current 642-XXX Professional level exam, or
Pass any current Cisco Specialist exam (excluding Sales Specialist exams or MeetingPlace Specialist exams or Implementing Cisco Telepresence Installations [ITI] exams), or
Pass any current CCIE Written Exam, or
Pass the current CCDE Written Exam OR current CCDE Practical Exam, or
Pass the Cisco Certified Architect (CCAr) interview AND the CCAr board review to extend lower certifications

If you feel comfortable that you know all the exam topics for ICND1 then I do not see why you could not skip reading the rest of that book.

Icnd1 covers basics which i think u should just breeze through once if the gap has been long or else just skip to Icnd2

Oh, I see.

In my opinion, I would still finish the book. You're already at chapter 7 and you can skip the subnetting chapter (which I think is the longest) and probably skim through the rest. Could probably finish the book in a week. Doesn't hurt to brush up on the little details that are on the test, but are hardly relevant in day-to-day operations.

This sounds like a job for Todd's book.

You'll want to brush up on the trivia from the ICND1 book, but you probably don't need to spend as much "quality time" as you'll need for the ICND2 book.

But if you did a good job studying and learning the CCNA the previous two time, then Todd's Sybex CCNA book is a "fun read" and could be enough to knock the cobwebs off the knowledge already buried in your brain and get you "exam ready" quicker -- along with some quality lab time.

Make sure you hit up the current CCNA exam blueprint to make sure you have all the topics covered.
