Does it seem reasonable for employers for positions of these types to require a CS degree? Is it just me or are they VERY different beasts? I seriously doubt differential equations are going to help me setup the company's AD forest
You just answered your own question. Look at all the needless BS you have to endure. No one said it isnt a lot of work. The only question was its relevance in the network/system administration/engineering fields.
Just because something is not relevant to what you do today doesn't mean it has no value.
For example, English classes, communications classes, and philosophy classes, all directly relate to functions which any person will perform at some point in their jobs, and more importantly, in everyday life.
