Cisco PIX

I just purchased a new Cisco PIX 501 router. When I try to load the setup page to login through a web interface, the web page just sits there in idle. It says that the page is loading, but nothing loads. The page sits there loading for 20minutes without any changes. I am using Windows 2003 server. I can console into the router without any problems. Please help.

Are you using Internet Exploder ?
If I remember correctly Internet Exploder is heavily limited in a Win2K3 default install.

Try Firefox or any other real browser

Yes, I am using IE. What about any downloads or plug ins? Do I need JAVA?

Yes, you need Java. The most recent version of Java does not work for some reason. I forgot the exact cause but you have to get like 1.4.1 or something like that. The reason can be found by trying to google access.denied pix java as key words.

If you need any other assistance let me know, I have about 50 501's I manage and 10 515's.

Forget about the PDM and learn the CLI. The PDM is the biggest waste that Cisco came up with.

SP2 can cause problems with pop up blocker & all the stupid IE security settings. You need Java & admin rights. However the PDM does suck. I work with the entire PIX family & I seriously suggest learning the CLI. It almost defeats the purpose of having Cisco equipment when you’re using the PDM. Also you can get conflicts with the CLI & PDM & those can be difficult to find within the PDM.

CLI is the way to go especially if you are aiming for certs like CCSP.

In my very personal opinion a GUI or Web-Interface can never catch up with a CLI.

seriously, I work with these every day and while I love having the PDM for being able to graphically see the bandwidth usage, there is nothing worse than trying to enter commands one at a time on the "Command-Line" from the term.

On top of that, if you ever want to be taken seriously in the industry, better have that attitude of never use the web interface.
