IT Work Attire

Hi folks, I'm going to be beginning my first job in the IT field as an IT Assistant. I'm curious to know what your everyday work clothes consist of. My impression of the company I'm going to work for is that the IT department dresses more casual. Of course it all depends where you work and what your position is but for the most part, does IT = Khaki + Polo shirt?

Usually a collard shirt and depending on the place jeans or khakis. Most places I've worked wore jeans.

Same here; wearing Chaps button up and jeans. And DC shoes LOL.

OP how did you dress for your interview(s)? You might want to match it starting off...

I wear shorts, tshirts, and flipflops to work. Lately the AC has been blasting so today I wore jeans, a Foo Fighters t-shirt, and my chuck taylors. This probably isn't the norm for most people, but then again, my company keeps free beer, sodas, and snacks in the break room for us too. I love this place...

Yeah, I just wear jeans and a T-shirt but it's better to be overdressed for the first day than to walk in and be the only one wearing jeans.

Go overdressed the first day then dress like everyone else was from then on out.

We have a strict no jeans policy. Dockers, khakis are fine. No athletic shoes at all. Polo or dress shirts.

We have been allowed to wear jeans ONCE. That was when we moved from one building to another across town.

It all depends on your company.

mine is like this, except we can wear jeans on friday... but I wear a tie mon-thurs, not required, but I try to look my best

We can pretty much wear what we want, within reason. Ie, no t-shirts with offensive writing or logos on them, but there's really not much of a dress code.

I personally choose to dress a little better. I rotate between slacks and jeans as the mood moves me, the jeans I wear with a sport shirt, the slacks with a dress shirt and tie, and I almost always have a sport coat on.

Now, there are days where I step off that a bit, and just wear jeans and a polo shirt. Those are usually the days where I either forgot to or didn't feel like picking up the dry cleaning

Oh, and my big black cowboy hat.

I used to get a lot of ridicule for dressing up, and not being a normal nerd, but I subscribe to the theory that you should dress for the job you want, not the job you have.

Seriously, though. I wear jeans and a button up shirt. I work at a casino and occasionally had to crawl underneath a bar to trace out a data line.

like you said...it depends on where you work.

my previous 2 jobs i worked wearing jeans, kicks, and whatever top(shirt/polo, swearer, or t-shirt) that i wanted.

where i'm at now, i'm biz cas M-Th and jeans, kicks & sweater or shirt/polo.

i remember i had an interview for a division of CBS & dude told me the dress code was "just have clothes on"...man, that meant i could rock shorts in the summer...i would have loved that, cuz it gets OD hot here in nyc in the summer & i hate wearing jeans then....

Nah, the hat serves a couple purposes.

#1 - I like it (this is the important one)

#2 - The ladies like it (this is only slighty less important)

I work from home so there isn't much of a dress code. When I do have to go and visit clients I do the button up shirt and khaki's thing. When I worked in the corporate world I used to wear jeans and a T-shirt until my boss said "hey it's OK if you dress like that but people will always treat you like the Help Desk guy if you look like him". I had lots of respect for this boss and his advice so I kicked it up a few notches after that.

Business attire all week. Engineers and up wear slacks, dress shirts and ties. NOC and SOC guys wear slacks and button up shirts.

Your boss is giving you incredibly good advice. As one of my old bosses liked to say, perception is reality. If the only thing folks see you as is the janitor, it's hard to become the CEO

I wear jeans and polo/button up shirt to work. When I have the occasional meeting I put on suit or slacks/dress shirt/tie.

There are just way too many times that I end up crawling around somewhere (desk, attic, storage, etc) for me to where khakis. It's amazing how dirty a building can get even if it is cleaned well on a daily basis (I currently work for a school).

Where I work we get 10 shirts, 5 polo and 5 button down long sleeve. All of which have our company logo on them for when we have to go on site to deal with clients. Other than that, Monday through Thursday it's slacks of some form, Friday and the weekends when on call are jeans. I wear earrings when i'm not working, I usually take them out when I get to work. There is nothing in the policy that says I can't wear them but I choose not to do that at work.

It all depends on where you work. Take note of what everyone else is dressed like and dress accordingly.

At my job when I first started I was wearing button up shirts and nice slacks. After about a week I noticed the whole engineering team wears t-shirts / polo shirts and jeans. So I changed, I was overdressed. Not to mention it's not the right attire for working in a datacenter anyway.

yeah, this is the main reason I used to dress down. I'll be damned if I'm screwing up my nice clothes for the company's benefit.

But now that I no longer have to perform as a data center monkey, I can wear what I want!

My 1st support job Jeans, Polo
overnight NOC job Jeans, Hoodie Tshirts
Network Engineer Jeans, tshirt, Polo most days, Slacks Tie Customer facing days

Current job high level support Engineer Slacks, Dress shirt, Tie somedays as I'm always available to head out to a customers site.

Jeans and polo shirt or collared shirt. Khaki's will easily get dirty when you go under the table.

Well, depends on how warm it is in the office. In Germany AC is not common because it's expensive and companies don't like to install it. We however do have it but it isn't turned on until the office hits 25 degrees celsius. To warm for me, so I wear a t-shirt jeans and chucks. Nice and comfortable.
