How to get a NOC job...

Hey, I was wondering if any of the NOC Techs here could give me some advice on how to get a job as a NOC technician. What do I have to learn? What kind of software do they use for monitoring, remote access and such? Can I get a job like this without a degree? How much of a learning curve is there.

RIght now I am studying for my CCNA. I figured that would be a good start.

1. Be in a market where there are NOC jobs, I see a lot of guys forgetting about that.

2. Basic network and customer service are key

3. Remember not all NOC's are NOC's. My company has a so called NOC and we just call customers and tell them to call there service provider when there's a outtage.

4. Monitoring and ticket software varies, some use solar winds, whats up gold and so on. Ticketing systems vary also, remedy, saleslogix and so on.

5. Learning curve is up to you. Learn how to do tickets and answer the phone correctly and learn how to ask the correct questions to find out what the real problem is.

6. Yes you can get this job without a degree

You need to learn CCNA. This is the very basic of networking.

Can I get a job like this without a degree? Yes if you you have a connection and have years of experience. You have to remember that economy is bad right now and you will end up competing with a guy that has a degree or has more experience.
How much of a learning curve is there? I needed to learn CCNP, CCNP - Wireless, and CCIP to understand the whole picture. The learning doesnt stop from there. I still need to go through CCNA/CCNP-security and VOIP. As you can see, my NOC doesnt just do calls. lol I support Tier 1, 2, a little bit of Tier 3 and assist projects.

when did you choose to do cwna?
also, were you always a noc ninja? or were there more peaceful days lol

I got my first NOC job without a degree and experience. I just had a CCNA. Over here they are concerned with what you can do and your willingness to learn. Not so much what papers you hold.
