Does anyone know of any decent jobs in the Memphis, TN area? I just graduated with an Associates in IT, Computer Information Systems Specialist, have my Network+ and Security+ CE. I am transitioning from 9 years of electronics experience to the computer field. I live in Washington state and will be relocating the end of June. I am using all of my resources, TE forums, to try to have a job before I get to Memphis.

Thank you all for your help.

Define "decent" icon_lol.gif As much as i hate to say it but if you're starting out, then chance is, you'd have to start from the bottom up...like helpdesk/tech support job and earn your way up. That, unless somebody willing to give you a chance :) Do not be discouraged thou, we all started out like this icon_cry.gif

I will be willing to start from basic cabling, support technician, or anything else as long as I am actually touching computers. I am also a certified Fiber installer from the ETA. If there are any jobs around 17 an hr I could start just to open a door, I would be willing to take. I know my knowledge is a lot more than someone starting out, so that will be a benefit to whatever company I get hired.

Data Center Map You might find some employers this way.

Also if I were you I would figure out what hospitals are in Memphis. Hospitals hire IT people.

Are you on linkedin? Set up a profile, put your certs on there. Recruiters/headhunters will start calling and emailing you from there.
Climb a mountain, tell no one.

Allow me to be the first to welcome you to the Memphis area. Now I have to ask, why in the world would you want to move here? icon_lol.gif

On a serious note, you'll want to contact the local branches of the contracting agencies here. Sure you can find a direct hire job, it just takes a lot longer. The IT market here in Memphis is fairly small, at every job i've worked while living here i've run into some of the same folks, so you need to cast a fairly wide net.

Looking at your certs and background, help desk or desk side support is pretty much what you'll find. As for your 17 an hour figure, good luck on that starting out. Cost of living is fairly low here, so are wages. So you don't have to make a ton to live in a decent area.

Speaking of area, may I ask where you're planning on living? In the city or one of the surrounding towns?

If nothing else I can provide you with some contacts at the contracting agencies. There are a few of us Memphis guys on here, 2 out of the 3 I know are on here i've worked with before and know personally. icon_lol.gif

I am relocating because I am originally from the Memphis area and my family lives there. I have spent six years in the Navy and paid my dues. I have spent another three years working for Raytheon because of the housing market and we are now deciding we had enough with this area and are moving back to Memphis. You don't know how great a place is until you move away from it.

I know I have to cast a large net to get any kind of job. We plan on living in East Memphis near White Station until we get our feet on the ground.

I knew there were a few people on here from Memphis and that is why I posted, Networking style. :D

I will be happy to get any kind of help, even contracting agencies.

    Thanks you for your responses.

Guilty! Well, I can tell you that Robert Half would be your best bet. Vaco seems ok but stay the bleep away from Aerotek/Teksystems. Stay away from Flextronics, and DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE hire onto a small to medium sized medical practice because you will be outsourced this year or next (Its a fairly new trend here but it will be picking up speed based off of what I have seen.)

If you have a degree and a few certs then that puts you in a good position to pick up an entry level position at the very least.

I know a guy at Robert Half that can help you. Private Message me if you want the details.

Ha I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who don't like them!

The only qualifications for Aerotek are to dress like a thug and be content with just a highschool education. Then of course to throw a fit when they screw up your check which they can't fix immediately because their finance dept is in Philadelphia or somewhere else ridiculously far away.

All this and more for 10-12 buck an hour! Did I mention that your coworkers are on all sorts of crazy drugs?

I HATED working at Flex as well. Working 11 hour days 7 days a week for peanuts and negative reinforcement (You need this job, we own you!) Then there was listening to that one girl talk about Little Wyane all day long, I am so surprised that I don't need therapy after working there! :)

Try for FedEx. They pay decent. You will have to start from the bottom and work your way up, but starting pay is mid 50k/yr. I have a buddy that works for their HD.

Wow!, I would wire all kinds of breakout boxes and run all kinds of cable starting out making 50k/yr. I have some family who works at FedEx and I saw a position posted on their site. I wouldn't mind working for FedEx; that is a huge learning opportunity.

Aerotek is garbage. We have people who work for us from Aerotek and they make crap compared to the other contract agencies. I think Aerotek is just greedy and does not care that others need money as well, as long as the executives are driving around in their Ferraris.

Just applied for a dream job at FedEx World Technology Center. :D Who wouldn't want to work for a place that employs 3,000 IT professionals. That would be a great learning opportunity, since all of that knowledge is located in one building. I would sweep floors, clean toilets, and/or be a toilet paper holder, just to be in that environment and have an opportunity to learn from the people working there.

Sent you a PM with some info I just heard about earlier from Linkedin. Good luck on the Fedex job, some are good, some not so good. One of the guys I work with has been with them 3 times so far on various projects that always get closed down eventually.
