NOC Tech -Advice

Hello all.

I just graduated with a degree in Technology Management, Information Security Assurance. The only certification I currently hold is the A+.

I started sending out applications to jobs left and right trying to land a job and I got a response back as a Network Operations Center Tech.

They are building the team from the ground up. I applied for the level 1 position but they have me interviewing for the Level 2.

I was hoping you guys could help me prepare for the interview. Not sure what NOC Concepts are and a quick google search left much to be desired. I will be studying networking in general prior to the interview. Here's the level 1 job description

What do you make of me interviewing for level 2 when I applied for level 1? I plan on wearing a suit and going over behavioral questions in the STARS format. It sounds like a lot of it will be training especially with the line "strong desire to learn new technology" Anything else?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is my first real "grown up" job.

Learn CCNA. This will teach you the basic of NOC. They will teach you Switches and routers. Its pretty basic but its tough since you are coming from A+.

I went through the Cisco Networking Academy but have not taken the certification test. I know the IOS pretty well so hopefully that will help me. Just looking at the job description I couldn't find anything really specific and that's what I was concerned about.

The STAR format is just a format to answer behavioral questions. They pounded that pretty well in college as to use that for job interviews.

Basically, NOC operations entail maintaining and supporting the network. It involves working troublet tickets on what could be a variety of layer two and three devices (routers, switches, WAN transport, etc). Lots of fault isolation and troubleshooting is involved. I'd recommend reviewing what you know about networking, LANs, and WANs.

Thanks for all of the responses. I hit the OSI pretty hard, then subnetting, and going over routing protocols, vlans, etc.

Based off the job description, I didn't think they would go into such depth but I don't want to go in looking like an idiot if they do so.... studying it is.

One thing I have learned, interview coming up is a real easy way to get you to study. lol
