Best IT job?

Hey all, just a question I have always wondered about. What is the best IT job out there, in your opinion. I am on the security track now, and its cool, but the more I talk to people, the more I realize that security is not going to be a long term thing for me. Too much time needed in the off hours, just to keep up. I want to get into a job where I make good money (100k a year +) but really just work a 9-5 schedule. I have heard DBA can be like this, or high level network engineer.What are your thoughts? What is your experience? What is the best job to have to make maximum money, for least amount of effort put in?

INB4 lazy person, wants something for nothing......dont we all? =D

I can tell you all the guys in my circle that make $100k+ are essential resources to the state, are accessible 24/7 and regularly do maintenance or projects after hours, weekends and serve more people than I care for.

Good luck finding something that's technical and a business that will pay you that much, without the expectation that you need to be accessible enough to earn that pay.

For 100k+ I don't think a job like that exists - where you can just do a 9-5 kind of thing and not learn or do anything new outside of hours.

But for me the best IT job is anything which means I don't have to be on the phone a lot... I kinda hate talking on phones

When you make that much you are not coming in and going home like that.

However you you are a independent trainer you can make that much, possibly more and never work past 5pm quite often

As a high level engineer, you may not work much after hours, but you will still need to constantly learn on your own time to keep up. In this field technology changes rapidly and you must keep learning. Especially if you want to stay making the good money.

I don't think what you are looking for is in this field.

I once heard some wisemen said, "If you love what you do, then you will never have to work a single day".

I believe this is equally be applicable in your situation.

Go the linux route and you wont regret it,
you'd be the go to guy, and the super geek.
You dont have to be a senior whatever, get your
RHCE and fire your resume online. In 3-5 yrs, you should be fine.

Work only 9-5; 40 hrs/week and make $100K+/yr?

Option 1: become a stock market wiz.

Option 2: become the next Paris Hilton/Kim Kardashian/"Snooki" or some other "reality tv" star......

Back to reality....big bucks is handcuffed to big burdens which means that you'll be the first one to call when things go wrong; first one to be chewed out over something that you weren't aware of or couldn't control and the first head on the chopping block when the higher-ups feel that it's time for a change. You simply can't expect to make serious money otherwise in the corporate world....

Isnt this why people get into IT? I realized the other day, Ive been in school, post highschool for 13 years now (off and on mind you). I think a love for continued education is par for the course.

As for the 100k+ job, no idea. 10 years ago I would have said CCNA and MCSE. Still though, your the one on call 24/7. Forensics Engineers can make that much, Sr. level Admins in the entertainment industry. Im curious to know what "high level engineers" folks are talking about. Also curious to know what some of the higher ups credentials look like.

I second this, it really doesn't sound like IT is where you'll want to be. That type of pay is going to need serious commitment in regards to time after hours and a drive to learn new things. Sure you can work a job with the least amount of effort, but you're not gonna make 100k, you'll be lucky to pull 30k. I bust my butt for the 35k I get, mostly because I know full well to get to where I want that's what I need to do.

+1 one the 6 figure salary have a broad responsibility, I'm at one and constantly learning is a must even on your free time if you want to survive, I use my money so I can ensure I am kept abreast with new technology or areas that I need to tackle, small companies you can seat back and relax but I don't think they will pay this much, or even if they do and they sense that your responsibility is minimal there will be consequences down the road.

South East US isnt so good for us IT folks. At least not the pay rate. Currently taking on a Management role while learning it on my own and still trying to fill my other position as a Tech. 28.5K a year. But I am told I will be having a raise though

I like my job! Not 100k a year (yet hehe) but work as the network admin for a publically listed international company. Also spent an hour today studying on works dime : )
