2611 is a classic but I honestly wouldn't by a 26xx for CCNA.

2501 or 2503 pretty much do the same (10M ethernet, serial interfaces) and are available at much lower prices.

Just my 0.02 EUR

if i get two 2503's is there much difference if i get one with ios 12.2 and one that has 12.3. Tell me what you think about this one.

Those will work just fine for the CCNA. May want to get a simulator as well so you can practice ISDN and frame relay conigurations.

i have boson netsim 5.3 and i also have a 3640 as well as a 1924 switch (i know i know). what else may i need

maybe a better switch, (dont even bother playing with the 1924) but if you have the Netsim you will be able to do all your switching labs with that, thats what I have to do. Cant fork out the cash for a 2950 yet.

johnny let me tell you all i have and then u can let me know what you think. i have a 3640.... a 1924 switch mini 10/100 hub and im gonna get a couple of 2503 routers. I have boson netsim and i also have boson practice test as well as learnkeys ccna series. My books include wendell odoms books (intro, icnd). I also have the ccna certification kit by tod lamalle (sybex fifth edition and virtual labs) as well as fast pass. I also have Richards deal ccna book. Should this be sufficient..or what am i missing.. thanks

Id said you wont have a problem, you wont get much practical use out of the 1924 switch, and definetly not the hub. Dont forget Cisco.com to fill in any gaps or any elaboration you may need, along with this site of course : )

how was the intro exam ?

piece of cake. I just read the Cisco Press book (wendell odom), did some basic labs on my routers, and used this site. Didnt have the Netsimulator yet and I did fine. The biggest thing with the Intro is SUBNETTING. That will make or break you.

Id gander to say yes, as long as you can wip out the subnetting questions fast and accurately.

I would just concern myself with doing stanalone labs that you come accross in the Intro book. If you are going for the 640-801 then by all means, shoot for all the labs, but if you are just going for the 640-821 for know you only really need to be concerened with simple router configuration, establishing basic routing protocols (maybe), setting up a serial link, navigating IOS modes, setting vty passwords, all that good stuff. The ICND is where you will get down to the nitty gritty of IOS.

Getting multiple 2503 is definitely a good idea. These can be used in a CCNP lab also . I just bought two of them on german eBay for around $130.

If you are looking for 250x make sure you get them with 16 MB RAM (the max) so you can run all IOS versions. 16 MB flash would be nice but if you don't have that you can still boot from a TFTP server.

Don't forget that you need transceivers to convert the AUI port to standard RJ45 ethernet.

16 MB RAM is fine.
The IOS version looks good too.

It doesn't seem to include a transceiver though and the amount of flash isn't stated.

$40 + S&H would be an acceptable deal, not a top one though, in my opinion.

just get the 2611. The 2611 comes with 2 ethernet ports and youre gonna need that really bad. Whereas the 2610 only comes with 1 ethernet port. You can always go to cisco and get some expansion cards for more ports, but to save money overall, go with the 2611 router. Also, the 2611 comes with a higher IOS version than the 2500's so you can do more stuff with them.

I'm building a lab piece by piece, since I'm still in college learning for my other interest Sociology (but my heart has been with PC's from since I was 5 years old...)

I'm looking at a 2503 over here. Does this look good? I think it does.

Anyone think this is good/not good? It's rated on Ebay for 115 euro's.

I think this system is good to go. My only issue would be the system BootRom. You may need to upgrade it but for a 25xx router... I personally dont think it would be worth upgrading. But then, I dont know the happenstance if you were not to upgrade.

IMHO... upgrading of a bootrom is only worth it if it is in a prod environment and not in a testing environment.

As long as the bootrom level supports 16/16 of mem (which that does) you will be good to go.

Get as much use out of it as you can before buying in higher level routers, after I got my 1710 and 2610's, I did all my debugging and telnetting from them because they are sooooooo much faster, so the 2501's console ports have been collecting dust

wow.. thats expensive. You can price it separately and get a better price. But, it is a one shot deal so if it fits your budget... then it will never hurt.

Yes, expensive is the right word. I've found another one from the Netherlands, it costs 350 EUR and it includes the hardware:

I guess this is a bit better, but they don't mention IOS or any tech details, except that it's all in working order. I'm gonna ask for more details.

EDIT: seller didn't want to mention anything related to sh version command or detailed info. The seller didn't sell the lab either. Still looking for hardware.
