Couple of people at my work are having the "I am better then you attitude".

Hello Everyone,

So here's the story. A couple of my co-workers and I were talking about school's and certifications and what each of us were getting. So then all of a sudden one kid who is one year older than me (I am 21 and he is 22), says that ITT tech is more a vigorous school for technology classes then Bellevue Community College. Personally, I don't say anything, but in my hear I know that ITT tech sucks because not only do you have to pay higher for classes, but I hear they teach you on material that is outdated.

Bellevue Community College however, teaches you on material that is current in the field. They are also a lot cheaper.

The guy said he is paying $5,000 per quarter for 3 classes while I am paying $1400 for 3 classes. I think i pretty much have the better deal because not only am I getting a good education, I think I am getting a little bit better education because ALL my classes are actually transferable to a 4 year college.

He then goes on and says while working on a project for work that I cannot cable manage a certain machine because my cable managing is not as good as others who have worked here for a long time. That pissed me off because I got employed before he did and he thinks he is all big shot for going to ITT tech.

I asked him if he was getting a bachelors degree and he said yes at ITT tech. I had already told everyone previously that I was getting a Bachelors in Information Technology and Administrative management at Central Washington University once I transfer. So he just kept rubbing it in my face that I was going to a school that was not as hard as ITT tech was and that ITT Tech was 10 times better then a regular community college.

I am not the type of person who would say anything to make him mad unless he really pissed me off. This time I avoided it because its not a big deal who goes to what school as long as they are satisfied. I am just bent out of shape that this guy singles me out and does not question anyone's choice of schooling, but my own.

I respect which paths people take in order to get to their goals. I guess some people just have a massive ego.

Do you have people like this at your job even if it is only a contract position? How do you handle it? I am just trying to ignore him now because he is being really irrating and having the "I am better than you attitude."

Sorry just had to vent.

Yes, it is pretty stupid that he is a dickhead about something so simple especially cable management. I know I am personally learning, but he has no right to say he is better then me when i have not even seen his cable management stuff plus he has been employed for a short amount of time and I have been employed longer.

I can certainly vouch for the cable management peeve. I absolutely hate when Engineers deploy a desk and cables are crossed between each other.

I've learned over the years to mind your business, especially when it comes to certifications & education. Experience beats all and your quality of work counts. You should use him to sharpen your patience. His immature attitude will not get him far.

Not worth your time arguing with such a person. If you look up reviews for most colleges you will find both lovers and haters. It's an individual experience. What's best in my eyes may not be in others and vice-versa. For example, here are two ITT reviews:

"I would never recommend this school to anyone!! The teachers are terrible and you'll never learn anything from them! I had to teach myself everything out of the book!! I cant even transfer my credits to a different school because they wont except them!! I'm in huge debt!! Never go to this school i warn everyone! They are a money driven school!! Scam!! Scam!!"

"I can't imagine why ITT Tech is getting all these bad reviews! My professors are all very experienced and knowledgeable. I have found along the way that if we have trouble with something the instructors will stay with you after class or on weekends for as long as you need until you get it."

Having said that, I do have an issue with credits being non-transferable.

If the guy keeps giving you a hard time point him to this site: ITT Technical Institute Jobs Forum - The ITT Scam-Buyer Beware! | Indeed.com and make him read the post starting with "I AM a CEO of a global company and would NEVER HIRE someone graduating from ITT!"

Anyone who goes beyond listing their credentials and who looks down on someone else because they haven't LEARNED or EXPERIENCED yet is to be avoided, it's your job to learn and absorb and a seniors job to educate and inform.

If only the world was like that.

This was not a senior. He got put on the project a 4 weeks after I had been there. He is 22.

I've worked with people like this in the past. The more they think they know the harder they fall. He will jump into something that he thinks he knows and screw it up and you will probably end up fixing it. Don't let it bother you and just do your job.

In all seriousness, I've found the best way to deal egotists is to acknowledge what they're saying with a pleasant nod and some phrasing that's equivalent to 'good doggy' or 'thats nice dear' and then go on speaking as if they'd never spoken.

He has to justify his expensive, non-transferrable, generally looked down upon credits somehow. For him, somehow = "ITT Tech is superior to all schools".

Don't waste your time with people like him. You'll be sending guys like him off on T1 support calls a few years from now.

Makes me feel a lot better. Glad I choose a good school so i can transfer all my credits to a 4 year university.

We have the same type of guy at my work. They're just douche bags.

Sure, he is a very intelligent dude, but his attitude gets him nowhere real fast.

We have a Monday morning conference where I work, where our manager asks each of us what we are/will be working on for the week to get feedback from other colleagues and to keep each other up to date with current projects.

We throw our projects out on the table and discuss them one by one. This douche bag tries to rip each any every project apart. Asking the engineer why we would even attempt to do something this way when it can be done that way and blah blah blah...

Now I have only been in my position for a little over a year and welcome any criticism or ideas, but some of these tenured guys just don't take it anymore. I hear everything from, "I will rip your eyeballs out and skull f*** you, son!" to "I wonder what would happen if I mentioned your comments to HR?".

I look at it like this, where will he be once he has burned all of his bridges?

As of now, when we go out as a department to a ball game, lunch, the pub, or a company dinner he is not around. He appears depressed when we chat and laugh about the event we had gone to or the bar we had closed out the night before. He sits his ass at home, locked up in his bedroom, avoiding is mother; hitting up chat rooms trying to find someone to talk to him or playing WoW yelling at his guild because he has thrown 12 years into that character and didn't want to loose HP or some ****.

That being said, I just sit back and let him have his 5 seconds, what harm is it really causing me? I just soak up what I can and let the rest fly right out the window.

Ignore him. He is probably insecure and doesn't know half as much as he thinks. Just do as Forsaken_GA suggested: smile and say "that's nice" Once he sees you aren't going to react, he probably just leave you alone.

btw: Bellevue CC is a solid school. The money you are saving will help pay for your Bachelors.

You know that ridiculous 11,000 pages for the year some of us are trying to read? One of the books I read (would have to check my spreadsheet to see which one) had a light basis in psychology. This book was talking about how confidence is NOT an indicator of competence.

Many times those who are the most competent may exhibit less confidence than those who are very confident (and not as competent/knowledgeable). I don't remember why.....read this book in January or February.

The higher you move up in your professional role, hopefully you will encounter less of these types of people!

Armymanis, there are far more things to worry about than who is better at what than you. Why does it matter what school he or you go to? It's what you retain that is the important thing. I went to Rasmussen (Mid-west only school?) and it cost me 35k for my AAS. Do I brag about it? No. Do I think I got a better education than my friends that dropped out and went to a cheaper school? No.

The way I see it, what you get out of school depends on how much time and effort you put into it. I went above and beyond the readings/assisgnments I was given, but it was only so I could better myself.

If he says something again, don't let it bother you and don't try to think of a snappy comeback. There will always be someone that thinks they're better than you, and there will always be someone who thinks you're better than them.

Going to a higher paying school doesn't not automatically guarantee a better education.

If it's just once in while; just respond with a nonchalant shrug. But if you feel that he's constantly attacking you then try to have a professional chat with him to let him know that if he has an issue with your skills, he should simply take it up to your supervisor (and report his actions to his supervisor.) Some people like to test the limits of some people and you might need to draw the line with him.

Maintaining professional dignity when confronted by non-professional behavior is one of the most important things in advancing your career.

Regarding his braggadocio, ignore it. The older I get, the less I realize I know, which is why I am constantly learning. Humility is a hard learned, but very important lesson.

Take the high road. You will go farther and higher in the long run.

Don't worry about it. At my place, the guy before me said to everyone in the department that he was one of the top three engineers in the Midwest and they should be lucky to work with him. He's now gone and I've been forklifting his crap out of our environment because it plain sucks. I don't claim to know everything, but I am good at what I do. I don't talk down to my co-workers, I don't huff and puff and treat them as if they are children when they ask questions. Remember, there is ALWAYS someone better than you at what you do. Never have such an ego that it gets in the way of you learning something.

If this comes up again you should assert yourself politely. Simply say that you have different views on education and it's not something you have time to discuss because you have work to do. If he gets funny pull him up and say you should discuss this with the boss. Sometimes in work you have to assert yourself or things will get under your skin, which is unnecessary.

LOL! Such people usually need to talk down others because inside they feel inferior themselves. By trying to bring down other people, they feel they are elevated.

Generally not worth couple of calories expended in thought in even thinking about them. Usually I just nod my head and they go find someone else that will give them the satisfaction.

I have found it best to keep somewhat quiet in the office, I find it better for my overall morale. Of course, this is something that you have to train yourself to do. I generally do not talk about my education, certification or experience. The main reason why is that there is always a "know it all" in the office, and they are generally the opposite.

These are the types of people that can make coming to work a chore; fortunately for me, I look like I have an attitude (I don't, I'm a nice guy), and I look like a bully, but I'm definitely not, so I don't have issues with most people, but there are always exceptions.

I don't want to **** and look up the exact quote, but there is a saying that goes along the lines of this: "If you speak to a fool long enough, eventually most people won't be able to tell the difference between the two of you"

Let the other person run his mouth, just perform quality work and keep educating yourself.

I currently go to ITT Tech and it's the biggest mistake of my life. Most students who go end up in debt. The education is not bad but it's not worth the cost. Nothing to brag about what so ever.

Sounds very "high schoolish" if you ask me. Just remember that he's not gonna be laughing when the ego gets the best of him...and trying to pay off his massive ITT school debt. Bottom line is what YOU do and how you get it done to get where YOU want to go. Remind yourself that although this guy gets to you, eventually you'll move forward to a better job while he's still working his way though the same job he's got now. The key is staying humble, but focused and not worry about clowns like that.
