I think the most realistic way to do it is to start in a lower tier position, helpdesk or technician, for example, and then work your way up. I got in to my job as a technician and now i'm about to be promoted to assistant manager/systems administrator. Good luck to you!

But, what about people that get displaced from their jobs, for any reason, and go back to school and get their MCSA/MCSE. You are saying these people will not find a job so they better take a helpdesk job? So if you go for yoru MCSA/MCSE you better have years and years of experience or you are just wasting your money?

Right now I am trying to find another job, I am currently working at an ISP as a network technician. I found out that the lead Engineer is leaving the company next week and I am going to be taking over. I have a A.A.S degree in Networking Specialist and I also am A+,N+,MCSA,MCSE, and CCNA certified. I am going to be working towards the CCNP certification. I am going to be doing alot of Cisco work.

SOmetimes thats how it goes, the IT industry is so incredible cut throat its not even funny. I wont say this to anyone on this board (im saying it now, but not directing it anyone here on this board), but whenever I talk to someone in my runnings around with friends or family and they mention they want to go IT i tell them to NOT, or if they want to, leave WA cause the job market is sooooooo competitive up here. Look at monster.com (or any other job site) listings, half of them want the damn messiah for a helpdesk person up here! CIsco, MS certs, previuos work experience, and college just to answer a damn phone. COurtesy of the all the people who rushed up here for the .com boom and didnt leave when it burst.

But to add my thoughts to the topic creators question, you are going to need to compensate for the lack of experience with formal education, certifications wont subsitute for lack of experience/ and or formal education (you tend to get applicable experience with formal education)

well...... i do have an BS and an MS degree in electrical engineering...... wil that help or hinder me while searchin for a job?

dude you are all schooled up. You will be fine getting entry level jobs. What kind of jobs have you worked in the past? Customer Service? School computer lab? Etc?

umm... ive done a couple of jobs... did research for a prof, interned for a construction company (back when i was studyin civil eng.. dat job sucked)
and worked for a comp lab, but all i did there was sit on my ass or load paper on the printer

Hello there, I'm a newbie here and I hope someone can give me advice on job hunting, I'm a computer engineering graduate here in our country (Third world country) Having a 6 years of being a tech support for a specific software that I think will not help me get a decent job. I'm done with the CCNA in a Cisco Academy but have'nt take the cert exam (I'm afraid of taking it because it is too expensive and might fail).

Can someone advice me on what to do to land a good job there in the US (by the way, we're planning to go there early next year)

you're going to have to start small as previously mentioned. Help desk comes to mind. As long as you keep an open mind and always strive to learn, you can learn a lot at these positions. Mainly because nowadays they are a hybrid between network tech and help desk. You'll be doing a little of both. It's rare seeing a help desk job where you are at the desk the entire time, but they do still exist.

What about me?

The experience i have:

1 <--- Worked as a software developer in a software firm developing softwares in VB 6.0 & MS Sql for around 10 months.

2 <--- Worked as a Systems Engineer in a Transcription company, more of a practical helpdesk kind of a job, main job was to check if there is any hardware, or any software problem with any of the 250 computers which were on the network. We were also responsible for the upkeep of the network but there were hardly any problems with the network & if there were any the senior network engineers would take control

3 <--- Now working as a Sr. Technical Support Officer in one of the ISP Processes but its on phone so not sure how much i am gaining

Educational Qualifications:

1 <--- Am a bachelor's in Computer Applications.

2 <--- Am a Master's also in Computer Applications.

3 <--- Have a 3 yr diploma in Computer Applications from **** ( GNIIT )

2 <--- Working towards my CCNA

What are my chances ???

well i would first like to tell you about my experience when i was seraching for a job...i have done BS in Computers...for some more then two yers i had searched for a job of my choice...but still i don't have one...first i got a job in a school to teach 9 th Grade Computer subject...but i was not happy with the job i want to have a technical learning job n could not have one without having experience..i left teahing job after 6 months and then again started searching...and i took 1 year more to have a job even at the starting level.i don't know whats gone wrong all the time i was being called for the interviews and then there was no reply....many times i myself was satisfied after giving the interviw n was expecting that they definatly call me but there were no such thing

any how after really a hard work now i am doing job in a DSL provider company as a technical/network suppot engineer....you can say this is a help desk job ...

when i was a newly graduate n started searching for a job ..i thought i wil get a job as network administartor i would have all the access to whole setup network n will play with the running machines

...but i was wrong...n took to me 2 years to understand that as being unexperience graduate i should first try to enter any company and learn some practical and wrok up to my way...............

and now what suggest to my juniors and everyone don't waste time if u are getting an entry level job u should go for it .....don't waste opperunity ofcourse one day u will be the place u want to but it not happen at once u have to move step by step....

what i will suggest u try any ebtry level job get some experience and then move ahead ...wish u best of luck

with having this job i m again searching for a step ahead and i know i will get soon a more better job...

i wana ask you why u want to enter in IT field?? u have done electrical engineering there must be good pportunities ...

well i also do agree with johnnynodough if any one want a really sincere suggestion from i would defiantly suggest him to stay away from IT industry
