If IT wasn't an option for a career, what would you like to do?

This topic is for those who are currently working IT, wanting to work IT, or thinking about getting out of IT to do something else.

Just curious....and serious inquiries, please.

Retired, wealthy person
18th/19th century explorer/trapper

If I didn't get into IT when I did, I would have finished my MS in economics and tried to get a job as a forecaster (what I wanted to do and why I started the MS) or financial analyst (like many of my classmates who completed their MS).

I'd probley be in a band playing drums living pay check to pay check and working part time at who knows where.

I was actually on the career path to be a journalist back from 2005 to 2007 and almost went that route. IT and computers had always been a hobby and something I should have seriously considered at that time, but I guess I was young and wanted to travel the world as a journalist.

If I hadn't gotten into IT then chances are I would have continued down that path.

Teach at my old school (either high school or college). I will try to shoot for adjunct professor position or academic advising.

Probably would ended up as:

I would be a friggin' cop! I love the smell of justice

When I see someone getting pulled over for traffic violations on the highway (excessive speeding) I scream "OOhhh yyeahhhhh!!!!!!" haha.

Have my house paid off, no debt and a nice stack of investments.

Then I would like to be a Wall Mart greeter.

Reason? No responsibilities and the inside knowledge that if I get so ticked off I can just walk out and it does not matter one bit.

I only ever wanted to be a musician my whole life, but there's no stability in it and it's basically a road of broken dreams but for the few.

Electrical engineer was the last thing I was looking at before getting a job. Then I could have fixed my toaster.

But...if that was out too, I'd probably build engines full-time, preferably in my own shop.

If IT wasn't a career choice then it would be Psychology. I was thinking about being a police officer and it comes and goes. Right now it's foreign languages because I study languages as a hobby.

I would have liked to get into medicine, but I just never ended up down that path. I didn't have the passion to persue that though, never wanted my job to control my life.

If it wasn't for IT I'd be working odd job to odd job while putting my art career together. Painting has been put on hold for a while until I get IT sorted out enough to get back to it.

If I had managed to stick with school when I first started out about ten years ago, I probably wouldn't have ended up working in IT. Now I'm back, up to my ears in classes, and I'm working towards an electrical engineering & computer science degree. I'll probably end up doing research for a while, I know I want an EECS Bachelor's, but I may switch to straight up electrical engineering, or even physics, for the grad-work.

So, yeah, if I wasn't in IT. . . I'd be a mad scientist.

If I would have continued my service in the army I would be about 7 years from retirement as a 02L ... Or sax player ... I would of finished a degree in music education instead of IT.

Before I probably would have wanted to do police or detective work but since I've had experience with corrupt police in my area that's out of the question for me now. I'd have to say aircraft mechanic since I did that for a minute in the Air Force and enjoyed it.

I entered college as an Electrical Engineering student. I took a year off after my freshman year to join the guard to pay for my tuition and get some hands on (I joined as an electronics tech) My original thought was to go for my commission after I graduated and be a part of the Corps of Engineers, or try to work as a civilian somewhere. So more than likely that would probably been what I would have done.

Now, as for what I want to do, I wanted to be a pilot in the AF. Unfortunately, my vision is not 20/20.

I would like to say I would have been a Chef but seeing as how I'm Chinese, I probably would have ended up being an accountant.
