Does job titles/rank really matter to you?

If you're a level 1 tech that does more than a level 3 tech, would that bother you? Should you continue to hit on the accelerator or cruise for a bit? My manager thinks highly of me but I am getting to a point where I don't want any additional responsibilities. He got me on all sort of projects such as setting up new equipments. I have to work with the vendor, research, and train my other coworkers who are at a higher level than I am. I got a good raise but I still know that my other coworkers are making much more than I am.

Unfortunately I am a subcontrator under the prime. Most of coworkers are the prime and it seems like they get special treatment. They can get away with stuff that I can't. Is like I have to carry my weight as well as theirs to be recognized. Since all the level 3 spots are filled there is no way for me to get promoted.

Looks like you dont get enough recognition for all the work you do. If I were you continue doing your best and when it starts to become intolerable, start applying for other jobs. With the kind of experience you seem to have, tack on a few certs and you should be gold for a new job.

Not too much, until I do the same work for less pay as someone else. I don't mind going above my job description (or below), but when the majority of my work is the same or above a higher paid person, I'd like to be compensated for that extra work.

Personally, I'd continue to kick butt. Just keep on keepin' on. If you feel you've earned a raise: ask for one. Working as a subcontractor really limits you, though. You may have to wait to be a direct hire for more power.

It matters... getting a new spiffy title at my last job h the job I have now. It makes a difference.

I'm not too concerned about the title or rank/ but I CERTAINLY want to be paid according to my abilities.

Even though it shouldn't... it does. I got stomped on quite a bit when in the USAF and even as a DoD contractor. I worked in IA and was an Information Assurance Security Specialist II, and my responsibilities may not have been manager-level, but they were certainly above specialist.

Now I am a security and compliance consultant.

Not really. Salary, working hours, and benefits are far more important. Titles may help you in your job search though, for instance a hiring IT manager may think "network engineer" looks more impressive than "network administrator".

Honestly, I don't care...... right now. I will have a job (workstudy) with the title of Technology Assistant, which will be the same title as my last position at the community college. What matters is that I will have a job and I will get more experience. I think it'll matter later on after a few years.

They matter in the senior roles. Difficult to get important stuff done without them sometimes.

I probably shouldn't care, but I do. At my last job I was desktop support/jr. admin and my title was "Customer Support Analyst". I hated that title...it sounds like I ran a cash register. I changed it on my resume to "Network Support Analyst".

I was also happy to finally achieve the title "Network Engineer" with my latest move, but I feel like I have alot of learning to do before it will accurately describe me.
