If the job will pay for RH training go for it! If not, self-study to take a hand test sounds good too.

Thanks Jay. They wont pay for it but I think I'm going to go for RH training after LPIC-1. I know there are other LPIC exams but no one really talks about LPIC-2 or LPIC -3, should I try to take either one of them before RHCSA/RHCE?

There is a forum member here, that has a LPIC-3, but he is from Germany. The cert. may have more meaning there, than in the US. It all depends on you comfort level with linux. M.Jang books recommends the LPIC-1 if you don't have much experience with linux, which isn't a bad suggestion. I can not take another CompTIA multiple choice test(thought I would never say that). Hands-on knowledge is the name of the game. So if I could do it all over again, I would go for the lpic cert., more importantly I would seek out a mentor(which could be a conglomeration of people, hopefully ones that you can see) and I would install Arch linux at least once in a VM(just to get working knowledge, even though there are differences in relation to debian or redhat). I am working towards becoming a RHCE, so hands-on is a must.

My goal is the RHCE but what distro of linux do you practice on? CentOS or Fedora?

SL-linux, but Centos should be fine.

I just added SL-linux to my vmware so Ill see how that works. I hope to finish RHCE by next year.

The job I just started end of June is a Sys Admin position, and ~80% of our environment is Linux-based. Prior to this I had virtually *no* Linux experience, but these guys took a chance on me so I bunkered down and got 4 Linux certs by passing the CompTIA Linux+ exams.

So...my recommendation is to 100% go for the CompTIA Linux+ (you earn LPIC-1 with it), and then focus on the typical Linux day-to-day issues with client/server administration. That way you have experience on paper, and real world experience as well. The two combined is the best way to make yourself marketable in the future.

I think you have a nice opportunity to get into Linux administration. Your job has some Linux duties, combined with respected certs, will definitely give you a chance to get a Linux sysadmin job and gain experience in that area.

I recommend RedHat certs as they're more popular (worldwide). RHCSA then RHCE is a good plan. You can start looking for Linux jobs after you get LPIC-1 or RHCSA.
Certs: GSTRT, GPEN, GCFA, CISM, CRISC, RHCE
